Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Playing Pakistan ‘exciting’ but ‘always a pressure match’

India and Pakistan will meet in the Super 12s stage of the 2021 men’s T20 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the UAE and Oman between October 17 and November 14. This will make it the first face-off between the two teams in more than two years, their last fixture having come in the 2019 50-over World Cup.On Friday, the ICC announced the make-up of the groups – both for the first round and for the Super 12s stage – for the big-ticket tournament, which will be the first multi-team, global event organised by the ICC since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic early last year. The final of the World Test Championship, featuring India and New Zealand, was hosted in Southampton last month.Related

The ICC did not unveil the schedule for the 16-team tournament, which is expected to be finalised shortly. The first-round matches will be split between two groups, with the games to be played in the UAE and Oman. Group A has Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands and Namibia, while Group B has Bangladesh, Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Oman. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 12s, which will be played in the three UAE centres – Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.Teams in the Super 12s have been pooled into two groups as well. India and Pakistan are in Group 2 alongside New Zealand, Afghanistan and two qualifiers – B1 and A2. Group 1 comprises defending champions West Indies along with England, Australia and South Africa and the other two qualifers – A1 and B2. The groups, the ICC confirmed, were selected on the basis of the team rankings as of March 20, 2021.In the 2020 edition of the tournament, which was originally scheduled for Australia and was later postponed by the ICC because of the Covid-19 pandemic, India and Pakistan were in different groups because they were No. 1 and No. 2 in the ICC T20I rankings at the time of the deadline. That would have been the first time the two teams would not have contested in the group stage of a global tournament since the 2011 50-over World Cup.This time, India are second behind England, and ahead of New Zealand, followed by Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, Afghanistan and West Indies. The last time India and Pakistan faced off was in Manchester in the 2019 50-over World Cup•PA Images via Getty Images

“There are some great match ups offered by the groups and it starts to bring the event to life for our fans as our first multi-team event since the onset of the global pandemic draws closer,” Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s acting chief executive, said in a statement on Friday. “Given the disruption caused by COVID-19, we selected the cutoff date as close as possible to the event to ensure we were able to include the maximum amount of cricket in the rankings which determine the groups.”There is no doubt we will witness some highly competitive cricket when the event gets underway in just three months.”The tournament was earlier scheduled to be played in India, but owing to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic in the country, the BCCI decided to move it overseas, even though the Indian board continues to be official hosts for the event.’Good to get Oman in the frame of world cricket’ – Ganguly
The ICC had named the UAE as the back-up venue for the tournament in 2020 itself. Recently, it decided to add Oman as a venue keeping in mind the volume of cricket that the UAE – especially Abu Dhabi – has hosted since the pandemic began. The UAE will also host the remainder of the 2021 IPL from September 19 until mid-October.The ICC felt having Oman as an additional venue would help keep the main grounds in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah fresh for the Super 12s stage. An ICC team is in Oman this week to inspect the two ovals at the Oman Cricket Academy.”It is good to get Oman in the frame of world cricket with the hosting of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, said. “It will help a lot of young players take an interest in the game. We know it will be a world class event in this part of the world.”Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary who is also the current president of the Asian Cricket Council, said Oman, who are one of the teams participating in Round 1, deserved to be on the global map: “Co-hosting the World Cup will put Oman Cricket on the global stage. They are also playing the Qualifiers and it will be an icing on the cake if they make it to the Super 12s.”

West Indies grab lead after Brathwaite 97, Holder fifty on day two

Hosts recover from 100 for 5 to end the day 34 runs ahead of visitors

Stumps West Indies and Pakistan’s last Test match four years ago was a classic, and if the events at Sabina Park are anything to go by, we may be in for another one. On an attritional day of Test cricket that didn’t swing as much as it just gently swayed, the two teams continue to be neck-and-neck. Simple math would dictate the hosts have the edge, leading as they do by 34 runs with two wickets still to spare, but with Yasir Shah in the fourth innings a historically significant factor, all bets are off.Kraigg Brathwaite (97) dominated the day, surviving almost through to the end after having to settle nerves after the frenetic finish of last night. He saw off each of Pakistan’s pace bowlers, the first new ball, a dangerous middle order collapse, the introduction of Yasir and two full sessions. But then it all changed as West Indies’ most threatening partnership – 95 between the captain and his predecessor was broken.Jason Holder was playing with delightful fluidity as his side pushed past 150 and bore down on Pakistan’s first innings score ominously. Yasir, not nearly at his best, was dispatched to the boundary repeatedly, and soon enough, a backfoot punch off Hasan Ali got Holder to his 11th half century. Eight runs later, though, he was gone, a victim of Faheem Ashraf’s subtle seam movement.Brathwaite, of course, remained and was even eyeing up a personal three-figure score – ideally before having to face the new ball in darkening conditions. It is hard to say if that played a role in his decision to hare back for a couple down to fine leg, taking on Hasan, whose direct hit caught the opener well short of his ground. He had departed three runs shy of what would have been a splendid hundred, with the wicket coming at a time when West Indies had firm control over the Test.Once Brathwaite fell, the visitors had a real opening, but wayward lines with the new ball, particularly from Shaheen Afridi, saw the lower order continue to eke out runs as Joshua Da Silva manipulated the strike intelligently. By the time the umpires began worrying about the light, West Indies already had a decent lead they will be keen to build on tomorrow. In overcast conditions in the morning, Mohammad Abbas had picked up exactly where he left off the previous day and was the pick of the bowlers, peppering the corridor of uncertainty between a good and full length. Roston Chase and Brathwaite had to be especially sure of their footwork, with the seam movement Abbas was generating an additional challenge.Afridi let his high standards dip somewhat, beginning with two leg-side deliveries that trickled away for four leg-byes each. It settled West Indies’ nerves, and once Chase drove Abbas straight down the ground, the runs off the bat became more frequent. Before long, they had brought up a half-century stand. But just as West Indies looked poised to take control, Pakistan struck. Hasan, who had been testing the pair in his first three overs, especially when they got on the front foot, coaxed an expansive front-foot drive from Chase that wasn’t really on. It produced a tickle through to Mohammad Rizwan, with an anguished look from the batter revealing quite how ordinary the shot was.The second session was a dogged, scrappy affair that – one sensational over from Afridi aside – West Indies negotiated with relative conviction. The problem for them, though, was that this time would be defined by four balls from Afridi more than anything any batter could manage.Just after West Indies brought up their hundred, Pakistan broke through with the wicket they had threatened before lunch. Jermaine Blackwood’s punchy counter-attacking knock might have been evocative of Rizwan’s cameo on the first day but it wasn’t nearly as assured, with all four of his boundaries coming off shots he wasn’t in control of. Afridi landed one in the slot for him to go after, but with the ball wobbling in the air, Blackwood only managed to toe-end it to Abbas at long-on. The very next ball, Kyle Mayers was struck full on the pad, and found himself departing for a golden duck.It might have gotten worse for West Indies. Two balls later, the irrepressible Afridi had Holder trapped in front, with the umpire raising the finger. The allrounder would survive by the barest of margins, with the review showing the ball pitching just outside leg stump.Holder understood the magnitude of the moment, and dug in. He did not score until a straight drive off his 12th delivery, and didn’t score again for 22 more balls. He knew the chance would eventually come, and launched into a wayward Yasir over towards the back-end of the session.Brathwaite, meanwhile, was pretty much batting on a different surface. His patience was exemplary, his shot selection immaculate. When Pakistan appeared to be having one of their purple patches, he had the awareness to retreat completely into his shell and place an even greater value on his wicket, and with Holder keeping the scoring ticking over at the other end, West Indies began to take control. The quick departure of both let Pakistan back in, though, and it feels increasingly as if it might all come down to fine margins again. Just as it did in 2017.

Wolves wanted £75m superstar under Lage, they signed Trincao instead

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil signed some quality players during the summer, but the Old Gold have failed to hit the ground running.

Unless things pick up soon, the manager could find himself under some pressure, no doubt about it.

Jorge Strand Larsen joined on loan in the summer, and Wolves will be hoping he enjoys a better temporary move than some of the previous signings who have joined on loan in the past, most notably Trincao.

Trincao’s Wolves’ statistics

The Old Gold signed the winger from Barcelona on a season-long loan deal in the summer of 2021, having an option to buy if he was successful.

In 30 matches, Trincao scored three goals, showcasing flashes of his talent at the Midlands side, but it was clear Bruno Lage wasn’t going to make his move permanent.

Francisco-Trincao-in-action-for-Wolves

In a strange quirk to the deal, Wolves ended up paying the La Liga side £5m to not make the deal permanent following a clause in the loan agreement.

He has since joined Sporting CP, netting 26 times across 108 appearances at the time of writing. It didn’t quite work out for him at Molineux, and the club could have signed someone else instead that summer. A player who is currently starring for AC Milan – Rafael Leao.

Wolves missed out on signing Rafael Leao in 2021

Ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, it was reported that Wolves were keeping tabs on the winger as it appeared that Milan were willing to let him go for the correct price, with talks even held with the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, over a potential deal.

It was certainly a missed opportunity for the club, as since this failed move, Leao has turned into one of the finest attacking talents on the continent.

Since the start of the 2021/22 season, the 25-year-old has scored 46 goals and grabbed 44 assists across 143 matches in all competitions, an incredible record.

Previously hailed as “unstoppable” by Milan legend, Fabio Capello, the winger has reached new heights during his spell in Italy, demonstrating his talents regularly for the Serie A side.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

According to Transfermarkt, the winger is now currently valued at an eye-watering €90m (£75m), which means Wolves will certainly not be able to lure him to the Midlands now, that’s for sure.

His valuation not only ensures he is the highest-valued player at his club, but he is also ranked as the 20th most expensive player according to market value in the world.

The 25-year-old has also impressed for Portugal, scoring twice at the 2022 World Cup as his nation crashed out at the quarter-final stage.

Imagine if Wolves had somehow pulled this transfer off. How good would Leao have been in the Premier League? It is a question no one knows the answer to, but it appears his desire to remain in Italy has paid dividends over the previous few seasons.

Trincao might not have been the worst signing Lage made, but considering Leao was a key target, it represented a major missed opportunity by the club.

There will be disruption to the start of the New Zealand domestic season due to the ongoing lockdown in Auckland. The opening rounds of matches for men’s and women’s sides from Auckland and Northern Districts will be delayed due to the current restrictions and the need to allow players adequate time to prepare.Auckland Aces will need to wait until round three to begin their Plunket Shield season on November 7. Last season’s Hallyburton Johnstone finalists Auckland Hearts and defending champions Canterbury Magicians will likewise make delayed starts to their campaigns, that will begin with a doubleheader weekend at Rangiora’s Mainpower Oval on November 6 and 7.”It’s certainly been a challenge,” Catherine Campbell, the NZC general manager of cricket operations, said. “I’d like to thank all six Major Associations and their teams, along with the CPA, for their assistance and cooperation.”We’ve had to adopt a flexible approach to permit players to perform at their best and maximise playing opportunities – whilst of course complying with Government requirements, and ensuring the health and well-being of all participants are protected.”The schedule has been changing right up to yesterday, and may well change again if Auckland’s Level 3 Lockdown continues. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it – we’re confident we have room in the schedule to make up matches as desired.”Reigning Plunket Shield champions Canterbury will get the season underway on October 23, hosting Central Stags at Hagley Oval, while at the Basin Reserve, 2019-20 champions the Wellington Firebirds host the Otago Volts.Central Hinds and Otago Sparks kick-start the women’s season on October 30 and 31 at Saxton Oval in what will be the first women’s domestic matches to be played in Nelson. The one-day Ford Trophy season will span November 30 to February 26. The Hallyburton Johnstone Shield Final take place on February 19, while the eighth round of Plunket Shield will begin on March 28 with the option of playing delayed fixtures in April.

Isak will love him: Newcastle will look at signing elite PL winner in 2025

Newcastle United have made great progress since their takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in October 2021. The Magpies have reached the Carabao Cup final and qualified for the Champions League via a top-four finish in 2022/23, in which they faced AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germian and Borussia Dortmund.

According to a recent report from The Athletic, the North East outfit have also spent a whopping £450m across six transfer windows, with a net spend of £350m. Transfers have not been easy to conduct due to the risk of breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations, although the Magpies have still spent plenty of money on the likes of Alexander Isak, who cost £63m.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

With that being said, the free transfer market is still of interest to Newcastle, and they have recently been linked with a move for one former Premier League star whose contract expires in 2025.

Newcastle target Sane

The player in question here is Bayern Munich and German international winger Leroy Sane. The 28-year-old spent a large portion of his career at Manchester City, before returning to his native Germany to play for the Bavarian giants.

Leroy Sane

Now, according to former Premier League scout Mick Brown, in conversation with Football Insider, Eddie Howe’s side ‘will be pushing hard to reach an agreement’ with the former Schalke youth product when they can open negotiations in January.

He went on to explain that Newcastle would not be the only side looking to add the Premier League winner to their ranks, although did not give any other names. It remains to be seen who else challenges the Magpies for his signature.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Sane would be a good signing

There is no doubt that, in signing Sane, the Magpies would be adding one of the most dangerous wingers in Europe.

He has a superb record for Bayern, with 49 goals and 50 assists in 179 games. His Premier League numbers speak for themselves, too; in 90 games in the top flight of English football, Sane has 25 goals and 29 assists. It is easy to see why football statistician Statman Dave called the winger “elite”.

samuel-iling-junior-leroy-sane-tottenham-opinion

His creative numbers were a real standout for Bayern last term. He played 27 Bundesliga games, scoring eight times and registering 11 assists. As per Fbref, Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Alex Grimaldo was the only player in the first division of Germany to register more assists, with 13.

Impressively, there were just two other players who registered more in Europe’s big five leagues; Alex Baena of Villarreal chalked up 14 and Aston Villa attacker Ollie Watkins, who registered 13 like Grimaldo. Sane’s expected assists tally of 10.8 xA was beaten by just six players across the big five European leagues.

This creative flair has always been a real standout feature of Sane’s game and he has formed some deadly partnerships in his time. He has combined for a goal with former Citizens teammate Raheem Sterling 17 times, more than any other player, and there are deadly strikers whom he has also linked up well with, including Sergio Aguero and Robert Lewandowski.

Stats from Transfermarkt

This is certainly a good thing for Newcastle, who have a clinical striker of their own in Isak. The Swede was in fine form during the 2023/24 campaign, playing 30 games and netting a very impressive 21 goals.

According to Fbref, he was statistically one of the English top flight’s best performers in front of goal. He slightly exceeded his expected goals tally of 20.3xG and came third amongst players with five or more goals for number of goals per 90 minutes, with 0.84. To put it simply, he is deadly.

Combining Sane’s creative flair and ability with Isak’s obvious quality in front of goal could be an incredible partnership for Howe. The German has a strong history of linking up with his club’s first choice number nine, and he would be looking to continue that with the Swede.

This could be the duo that can potentially take the Magpies back to the heights of Champions League football. It would be a superb acquisition if Newcastle could fend off interest from other clubs and win the race to sign Sane on a free transfer.
