Everton wanted to sell "monster" for £40m, now he’s worth millions less

Sean Dyche has actually succeeded in turning things around, at least in the short term. Of course, Everton are walking a long and treacherous road in the Premier League this season and must sustain their recent resilience.

Southampton might have secured victory last time out, claiming their first top-flight win of the term, but Everton showed spirit and saw resurgent striker Beto score a last-gasp equaliser, only to be chalked off for a marginal offside.

There goes the five-match unbeaten streak. But then again, the fact that Dyche constructed such a run bears testament to his character – and his acumen and tactics and tenacity.

He’s not going to roll over and expose his front, will fight to bring the Toffees back to the fore as they seek to step into a brand new world under the financial influence of The Friedkin Group.

The mob’s volume had risen several decibels after losing all four of the opening league games, and though Everton are now covering distance, there’s sure to be plenty for TFG to sort out in 2025.

Where Everton need to improve under TFG

Friedkin purchased Farhad Moshiri’s majority 94% stake in Everton back in September, closing an interminable period of uncertainty for one of the Premier League’s proudest outfits.

There’s plenty of work to dig into. Jarrad Branthwaite’s future is bound to be a hot topic once again when the 2025 summer transfer window approaches: Manchester United have had a vested interest in the centre-back this year.

Addressing the full-back positions is also going to be one of the first ports of call. Ashley Young is as industrious as ever, but he’s also 39 years old. Vitalii Mykolenko, conversely, is struggling, regressing from the promise once shown. Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson are fit again, but Coleman is also getting on and his partner has been routinely injured in recent years.

Ireland captain Seamus Coleman

Everton do have enough depth to ensure success this season and create a platform for TFG to build upon. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s revival, for example, has played a focal role in the campaign.

However, the 27-year-old is very much at the core of the club’s issues: he’s out of contract next summer, with a resolution not forthcoming.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's contract conundrum

Calvert-Lewin has amassed 257 appearances for Everton over the years, across all competitions, and has notched 89 goal contributions for his efforts.

It’s a fine thing that Calvert-Lewin has recovered his fitness levels, but he’s not doing enough at the front of Everton’s ship, and when considering that he earns £100k per week and has a patchy history, it’s perhaps the right time to cut ties.

TFG could do plenty with the funds freed up by the 11-cap England international’s departure, and relevant chiefs will no doubt be emboldened by promising signs displayed by Beto – with Armando Broja an exciting, if yet untested, option too.

Who knows, but maybe Calvert-Lewin is suffering from having entered the twilight phase of his bumper Blues contract, encumbered by the growing noise of potential suitors and a barren spell that deepens with each passing fixture.

It’s a credit to Dyche’s system that Everton have found comparative success without the striker’s scoring, indeed notching all three of his goal contributions this term during the four-game losing run that began the term.

Change is good, a natural part of football, and Calvert-Lewin might well be approaching the end of his time on Merseyside. He will be remembered fondly, a “monster” of a centre-forward on his day, as he was once declared by talent scout Jacek Kulig before setbacks gripped him in their vice.

Everton must enforce changes this summer but are surely rueing the decision not to have sold the Three Lions star this summer when lofty figures were touted.

Everton should have sold Calvert-Lewin

Newcastle United boast one of the Premier League’s finest strikers in Alexander Isak, who has been declared “world-class” by his manager Eddie Howe.

Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle

But with Callum Wilson out of contract next summer and William Osula not yet ready for so many minutes in the Premier League, they had earmarked Calvert-Lewin as the dream option to come in and play as the Swede’s foil.

The Magpies’ interest was strong, but there were understandable concerns looped around Calvert-Lewin’s injury record, and thus efforts were held in abeyance when Everton put forth £40m demands, indeed deciding against returning as the summer market entered its later stage.

Everton must rue their inability to convince the Tynesiders to pay up, for Calvert-Lewin is now in the final part of his Everton career and has naturally seen his market value take a significant nosedive.

In fact, according to Football Transfers’ player valuation model, the number nine is currently worth just £8m, which is probably thereabouts the figure that interested suitors would be interested in forking out if negotiations for a January acquisition were to take place.

Everton have clearly planned prudently by signing Broja, aware that Calvert-Lewin is into the late period of his Everton career, but since he’s taking up major resources, not paying back the faith with commanding attacking performances and was on the cusp of departing for a £40m recoup in the summer, this must be frustrating for TFG, who could have done with the war chest.

Not just Dele: Everton could revive "animal" who's yet to feature in 2024

Everton will be looking to revive some struggling players under TFG – including Dele Alli.

O atacante então serviu Lucão do Break.

Move over Jones: Slot can unleash his own Xabi Alonso in Liverpool starlet

It’s been almost three months since Liverpool’s 2024/25 campaign began, and Arne Slot’s side perch atop the summit of both the Premier League and the Champions League, having qualified for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals too.

What a start. When Jurgen Klopp stood down from his lionised manager’s position at the end of last season, no one envisaged this. But it has happened, and with Arsenal and Manchester City both currently out of sorts, the Reds faithful will be cautiously hopeful that big things might be achieved.

It could have been different, so very different. As soon as Klopp spoke into the camera and shattered a city’s red heart, rumours started bobbing up regarding Xabi Alonso, who appeared to be the perfect successor.

He’d been working wonders with Bayer Leverkusen, but rejected Liverpool’s probes and confirmed that he would remain in Germany for the foreseeable. A prudent move from a 42-year-old coach who knows an elite managerial career lies ahead, one that may, one day, find him in the Anfield dugout – on the righthand side, at least.

Indeed, Alonso made his return to Merseyside this week and saw his team, so indomitable last year, utterly wrecked by Slot’s machine. At the core of the home side’s success was Curtis Jones, who looked to be cut from the same cloth as the legendary Spaniard at times, his passing was so slick and stylish.

Curtis Jones' "Alonso-esque" display

Jones, 23, has ebbed and flowed throughout his Liverpool career, often demonstrating great promise but also being plugged back by injuries and infrequent starting berths that come as a by-product of such setbacks.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones

But he has started to find his feet under Slot’s management, having waxed lyrical about the Dutch coach’s tactical philosophy during pre-season, explaining to reporters that the more control-oriented brand suits his own passing game perfectly:

It’s understandable. As per FBref, Jones ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 10% for assists, the top 17% for progressive carries and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90.

Technical and driven, he’s almost tailor-made for Slot’s style of football and it’s no wonder he’s starting to look like a fundamental piece of a thriving system, showcasing his quality against Alonso’s side in midweek.

That through ball was a thing to be witnessed. So simple, yet so perfect, weighted with an artist’s flourish. The Athletic’s James Pearce had even praised the “Alonso-esque” through ball, with the opposition manager’s identity certainly not lost on the correspondent.

Jones’ particular approach to the midfield craft is something that Slot is utilising well, but he’s not actually Liverpool’s own version of Alonso.

Instead, the club have a more fitting successor in Stefan Bajcetic, who is currently out on loan with RB Salzburg in Austria.

Stefan Bajcetic could be Slot's version of Xabi Alonso

In the 2022/23 season, Bajcetic made 19 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, emerging from the youth fold to save a squad in crisis, scoring once – against Aston Villa in the Premier League – and announcing to the Reds supporters that they had a new prodigy to rally behind.

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.

Bajcetic was signed from Celta Vigo for just £224k in December 2020 and is touted for a star role in Liverpool’s engine room. Now 19, his fast-paced development was halted last term as he battled against injuries and growth-related issues that restricted him to a mere handful of displays.

Hailed for his “special” skill set by journalist Zubin Daver, the Spaniard is making headway under Pep Lijnders in Austria even if Salzburg as a whole are flattering to deceive, with five Bundesliga starts to his name and metrics that highlight his roundedness.

Indeed, as per Sofascore, Bajcetic has averaged 2.2 tackles, 1.5 dribbles and six successful duels per top-flight game this term, winning a whopping 62% of the lattermost metric – placing him in the same ballpark as the thriving Ryan Gravenberch (64% success rate in the Premier League).

He’s making the requisite improvements, shaping into a midfield force. Alonso, elegant and all-seeing in the middle of the park, was indeed an elite long-range passer but he was also a tenacious and confident protector of his backline. However, not the most imposing of athletes, this was down to his intelligence and knowledge of his craft. Is it really surprising he’s turning into one of the finest coaches in the business?

Perhaps not. Bajcetic, too, is not a hulking, heavyset force of a titan, though a spurt across the past year has seen him stretch to a height of 6 foot 2. Even so, his range of defensive qualities comes from a cerebral understanding of football that belies his youthful years and inexperience.

The Spanish midfielder plays with an almost unflappable mindset, reflected in his playing style. He’s not got the same surgical distribution that was innately formed in Alonso’s itinerary, but that’s not to say Bajcetic isn’t capable of splitting defences with well-worked balls.

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.

Bajcetic will continue to hone his craft over in Salzburg, but keep an eye on him, for he might just return to Merseyside with a hunger for stardom under Slot’s wing, and he might just challenge the likes of Jones for a starring spot in a competitive outfit.

Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of South Africa’s upcoming three-Test series against India due to a “persistent” hip injury. Nortje has not bowled since the Men’s T20 World Cup in November, and is still struggling with the niggle and does not have sufficient bowling loads under his belt to be cleared to play. CSA’s chief medical officer Dr Shuaib Manjra told ESPNcricinfo that Nortje is undergoing rehabilitation and is aiming to be ready for the ODIs against India in mid-January.Nortje’s absence is a massive blow to South Africa – he is their leading bowler in Tests this year. Nortje has taken 25 wickets from five Tests at 20.76, six ahead of his nearest team-mate, Keshav Maharaj. No replacement will be called up to the squad, which includes seven other seamers. The door is now open for Duanne Olivier to make a comeback after his return from the Kolpak system, which ended with Britain’s exit from the European Union. Olivier is the leading wicket-taker in the domestic first-class competition with 28 wickets at 11.14.Olivier is likely to bowl alongside Kagiso Rabada and one of Lungi Ngidi, who has not played competitively in five months, uncapped left-armer Marco Jansen. Other options include Beuran Hendricks, who has one Test to his name, and Glenton Stuurman and Sisanda Magala, both of whom are uncapped.South Africa’s squad has begun its final preparations for the series that starts on Boxing Day, and so far has come through all Covid-19 tests successfully.

Amorim now thinks he’s found a £54m upgrade on Rashford for Man Utd to sign

Ruben Amorim wants Manchester United to sign a player valued at £54 million as he is seen as an upgrade to Marcus Rashford, according to a new report. The January transfer window is the first opportunity INEOS have to make changes to the squad under Amorim’s regime. It is likely going to be a quiet month for the Red Devils, but if opportunities present themselves, they could add one or two players to their squad for the right price.

INEOS submit £83.5m offer to sign "dynamic" attacker for Amorim at Man Utd

United’s hierarchy have submitted an offer for a player who is also wanted by another European heavyweight.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 18, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

There are a number of positions in the United team that need addressing, but some may have to wait until the summer, as January is always a difficult time to sign players. Amorim and INEOS do have a few players on their radar as the New Year approaches however, and one of those is midfielder Leon Goretzka.

The Germany international has endured a frustrating campaign so far, as he’s not been used as much as he would have liked by Vincent Kompany. The 29-year-old is still under contract until 2026, but a move could be on the cards either in January or next summer.

leon-goretzka-transfer-gossip-manchester-united-bayern-munich-jude-bellingham-ten-hag

But he is not the only midfielder the Red Devils are linked to – United are also interested in Oihan Sancet from Athletic Bilbao. The Spaniard has a release clause of £67 million, and he has another team, as well as United, interested in his services, as Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are also keen on bringing him to England and the Premier League.

Amorim thinks Pulisic is an upgrade on Rashford

According to Caught Offside’s Daily Briefing, Manchester United are interested in signing AC Milan’s Christian Pulisic but face competition from other Premier League teams. The USA international joined the Italian giants in July 2023 and made an instant impact at his new club, as he scored 12 goals and recorded nine assists in 36 Serie A games.

Pulisic has continued that impressive form into this 2024/25 season, as he’s got a quite incredible five goals and nine assists in 11 league appearances. The 26-year-old is under contract until the summer of 2027, with Milan having the option to extend it by another 12 months, but that hasn’t stopped United from showing an interest in the player.

This report states that Pulisic is on the radar of United, as well as Arsenal and Liverpool, as they all look to bolster their attack for different reasons. Amorim sees Pulisic as “an upgrade on Rashford,” and with Antony expected to leave, there needs to be competition for Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Pulisic is a key player for AC Milan and has been since he joined the club, so any interested club will have to persuade the player and Milan to part ways. It is reported that a minimum offer of €65m, which is roughly £54m, would be needed to get negotiations underway.

Beth Mooney suffers fractured jaw ahead of Ashes

Australia have suffered a huge blow ahead of the Ashes with Beth Mooney suffering a fractured jaw during training on Monday and she will undergo surgery.A timelime for Mooney’s return has yet to be determined but there remains hope that she will still be able to feature later in the multi-format series. However, with the condensed nature of the matches it may yet be the focus shifts to recovering in time to leave for the ODI World Cup in New Zealand next month. The incident occurred when she was getting throwdowns from head coach Matthew Mott and was struck by a short delivery.Mooney would have been a lynchpin of Australia’s top order across the three formats. Earlier this season she played one of the finest ODI innings with an unbeaten 125 against India in Mackay.Related

“Unfortunately I played a pivotal role,” Mott said. “Throwing balls to Beth, she was batting incredibly well, and as can happen just a rogue ball came up and put her in a pretty tough position. She tried to get out of the way and unfortunately copped it on the side of the chin.”The good news is that our doctors are pretty positive that the way jaw surgeries are working these days the comeback time is a bit shorter. We are looking for her to play, Beth certainly wants to play, but we’ll have to be smart and listen to the surgeons. She’s an incredibly tough character. The ball hit her quite hard and her reaction was very stoic.”You never want to get one of those but on the eve of an Ashes is probably the worst time. We’ll get through that. She has a lot of great supporters here.”Her absence means there will need to be a reshuffle of the batting order at least for the T20I series with a new opening partner alongside Alyssa Healy. One option would be to promote Rachael Haynes although Australia like having her security in the middle order. Mott said the Australia vs Australia A matches on Tuesday were a chance to assess options and for players to stake a claim with uncapped Georgia Redmayne, who was in the squad against India, another in the mix.Australia’s preparations have also been hit by Covid-19. Ellyse Perry will miss the intrasquad warm-ups in Adelaide on Tuesday having been involved in what was termed a “scare” although is expected to link up with the team later in the day and be available for the T20Is which start on Thursday.Australia A players Molly Strano and Katie Mack will also miss the warm-up matches after testing positive to Covid-19 and will not travel to Adelaide. Mack will remain at home in Canberra ahead of the Australia A 50-matches against England A, while Strano will travel direct to Canberra once she completes her period of isolation at home in Hobart.”Think we’ve moved past trying to avoid Covid completely and there’s a realisation that it may infiltrate our group,” Mott said. “Where we’ve tried to be really smart is to keep as separated as we can for as long as we can so if someone does go down that we can isolate that really quickly and not take the whole group down. There’s probably more to come, but watching the Big Bash and the way teams have been able to move and get on with it is something we really need to do for this series.”South Australia and Melbourne Renegades allrounder Courtney Webb has been called into the Australia A squad as cover for Strano and Mack.
