Alex Lees vows to 'stay in his lane' in bid to bounce back from England axe

Opener accepts route back won’t be swift after failing to pin down his berth in 2022

To many, the decision to cast Alex Lees aside and keep faith with Zak Crawley for the tour of Pakistan was a surprise. The opening pair had very similar 2022 summers, though Lees shaded it on every metric: runs, average, half-centuries and double-figure scores. Except, ultimately, on talent ceiling. The three wise men of England’s set-up – Rob Key, Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes – had long spoken of Crawley’s incredible potential, and when he finished the English season with 69 not out at the Kia Oval to sign off the Test summer with a series-clinching victory over South Africa, picking between the two became easier.Crawley went on to score a century in Rawalpindi, his first innings of a Pakistan tour that would eventually reap 235 runs for some much-needed currency going into 2023. Lees, meanwhile, was at home with his wife and two children, gearing up for a Christmas of family, reflection and decluttering.”I’m sure I wasn’t amazing to be around for a couple of weeks,” Lees says, recalling his mood at certain times over November and December. “But those things [family] always ground you and give you a good perspective on life. And what can you do?”By his own admission, his axing was greeted with dismay. “I think it’s human nature. If anybody has some news they’re not particularly happy with, if you’re in sport or life, there’s a natural distaste in your mouth.” But it was no bolt from the blue.”I wasn’t a dead cert to go to Pakistan. I’m not naive with that. My runs probably didn’t reflect some of the impact I did have in some games. Some of the run-chases, in particular.”It wasn’t like it was definitely not on my radar that it wasn’t a possibility. They had given us some encouraging support throughout the summer. But unfortunately, it’s part of sport. There are always going to be tough decisions because, for somebody, it’s not great news.”There had bee an inkling of bad news on the horizon when Lees failed to make it onto the central contracts list. Confirmation of his axing came via a call from Key, director of men’s cricket, and McCullum. Amid the commiserations was a clear message: to spend the time away refreshing and then developing his game in line with how the Test team is progressing. To be punchier, domineering and self-assured. Something which he has already begun working on with Durham, and will hope to expand upon for England Lions in Sri Lanka over the next month.”For me, I’ve just got to keep staying in my lane and keep trying to develop as a player. And hopefully, if I can go back and put some good performances in…” Lees pauses, before doing some internal mathematics. “It might not necessarily be this year but over the next couple of years while I’m still young enough, hopefully I can be afforded another opportunity at some point.”There are a couple of things that stick out here. Firstly that Lees recognises the man who has replaced him, Ben Duckett, will be backed for a long period of time. Not just due to an impressive return to Test cricket this winter but because loyalty is a key tenet under Stokes. Any return for Lees will take time, in part because his replacement will be afforded the same luxury of consistency as he was.The second, more important, part might be “staying in my lane”. There is a degree of misapprehension surrounding The Word According To Baz and Ben: that they are asking players to have a bat on the wild side. While the shift has been towards being more assertive in the middle, the onus is on the player to find *their* best way of doing that.Lees made a 44-ball half-century to power England’s chase against India•Getty Images

Looking back on the summer of 2022, there were moments Lees successfully accessed this side of himself. Specifically, the fourth-innings chases against New Zealand at Trent Bridge and India at Edgbaston. Scores of 44 and 56 set the tone for successful pursuits of 299 and 378, respectively. Both knocks earned praise from the skipper, coach and those who went on to take the glory of seeing England home for building the foundations for those successes. It was a contrast to the first three of Lees’ 10 Test caps in the Caribbean. As England transitioned from Chris Silverwood’s tenure after the 4-0 Ashes loss, the unknown of the summer meant a holding pattern in March. Stasis followed, along with a 1-0 series defeat to West Indies. Lees struck just 126 runs across six innings, at a sedate strike rate of 27.39. It was a period, he explains, in which he was simply trying to fit in.”I don’t see myself as a limited player,” he says, reflecting on the early knocks. “I think it was obviously a conscious decision: you’re just trying to buy into whatever the team’s philosophy is. When I made my debut in the West Indies we’d come off the back of a regime where there was a big importance on first-innings runs no matter how slow or how long it takes to get them. So I think I was just trying to play in line with what the team ethos was at the time of each tour.”But it’s not that I’m a one-set style of player. I was literally just trying to bring the captain and coach’s vision through action.”As such, despite the struggles of the summer, Lees did not feel he was trying to do anything alien to him. If anything, the 29-year old was recalling an approach utilised throughout his earlier years at Yorkshire, when he enjoyed success against both the red and white ball with a game that suited both. The kind that earned him the nickname “Haydos” from then-Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie, after Australian left-hander Matthew Hayden, who was an early inspiration for Lees as a fellow southpaw. The change since has been as much about age as a shift in conditions and surfaces within county cricket.”I think in respect to the style of play it’s probably something I hadn’t played for a little bit of a while,” he says, “just due to the wickets not being that great in county cricket the previous few years. So it’s not something I’d been accustomed to in the immediate near past.”But I think the start of my career I felt very comfortable and I probably played in that manner, particularly when I started playing at Yorkshire because the wickets had a bit more pace and carry in them than what they had in the last few years. So I think referring back, naturally, I didn’t feel too bad. I just had to tap into a different part of my career and I felt fine with that.”The factor that will help any future case Lees puts forward for adding to his Test caps is the degree to which he bought into the project. Team-mates regarded him as an engaging presence in the dressing-room, sociable even during stressful periods and unwilling to take a backward step. The best example of that last aspect came in the one-off Test with India when he was more than willing to bite back at Virat Kohli when the pair were verbally jousting on their way off the field at tea on day four. At stumps that day, he played down the incident as a big of fun: “He’s obviously a very competitive person, and I’m quite headstrong also. That’s what my wife says.” Nevertheless, standing up to such a decorated opponent went some way to showing Lees was committed to the cause and developing a sense of belonging.Related

Bazball belief to white-ball ambitions: Crawley determined to be an entertainer

Naturally, that makes his current situation a little tougher to bear. At the same time, he is fixated on returning as a more accomplished player. Following a return to training with Durham at the end of 2022, he moves forward into the Lions’ two “Tests” against Sri Lanka A knowing exactly what he needs to do, and how he needs to do it.”I think I enjoyed being in that environment, especially in the summer playing in a successful side,” he says. “It was brilliant. I think my reflections on playing those games, I sort of played pretty competently but just lacked that big score which is obviously the difference. As a top-order batter, you’re averaging mid-twenties to mid-forties for the summer which, in essence, is what your Test summer is built around.”My biggest reflection is disappointing, having got myself in good positions throughout the summer and I just didn’t capitalise on it. I’d love to experience that environment again and I think if I do, my biggest learning from this summer is that I need to make big hundreds.”That’s the difference between the average summer I had and an exceptional summer and being left out. I’m fully focused on getting back in.”

Aston Villa can forget Duran by unleashing their 19y/o "star in the making"

Aston Villa are not short of attacking options in their current squad. Unai Emery has a plethora of attackers, with some January signings helping to reinforce that depth up front. January additions Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio have made a fast start to life at Villa Park.

Rashford, who is on loan from Manchester United, has three assists in seven games, and Asensio, who is at Villa Park temporarily from Paris Saint-Germain, has already scored five goals.

Villa also signed Donyell Malen in January from Borussia Dortmund, adding to the depth of an attack that includes Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Leon Bailey and Jacob Ramsey.

However, the West Midlands outfit did lose one of their big-name forwards, Jhon Duran in the winter window.

Jhon Duran’s Aston Villa record

It was hard for Villa to turn down Saudi side Al-Nassr’s offer for Duran in January. He left the club to link up with Cristiano Ronaldo for a fee that could reportedly reach as high as £71m. Given they paid just £18m two years prior, that was a strong deal for the Villans.

Indeed, Duran’s record was impressive in that famous Claret and Blue shirt. He scored 20 goals in 78 appearances, but only featured for a total of 2272 minutes. That is the equivalent of 25 full 90-minute games, leaving him with an impressive goal-to-game ratio

The Colombian striker was a scorer of sublime goals during his time at Villa Park. He was not afraid to try his luck with a shot from range, including a screamer against Everton, which proved to be a winner in a 3-2 comeback win.

Losing the 21-year-old was certainly a blow for Villa, especially when you factor in the number of goals he scored in such a short space of time. However, they have replaced him with the likes of Rashford and Malen.

In fact, it is not only their January recruits that could be the answer to filling the void left by Duran. The answer may also lie in the academy.

Aston Villa’s in-house Duran replacement

The Villans academy has produced some great talent over the last few years. Of course, Jack Grealish is arguably the most famous academy product, but more recently, stars including Ramsey and Carney Chukwuemeka are also graduates.

Next in line to graduate from the Villa academy could be Scottish striker Rory Wilson, if the youngster’s current situation is reversed. Described as a “star in the making” by football scout Antonio Mango, the former Rangers youngster has impressed for Villa in recent years.

Throughout his time at the club, he has played 53 games, and already has 36 goals to his name. That includes an incredible record of 27 goals and two assists in 25 appearances for the under-18s side, for whom he averages 1.16 goals per game.

Wilson’s involvement this season has been few and far between. He started 2024/25 on fire, with a record of two goals and one assist in four games, but has not played since September.

In The Pipeline

Although he had an injury at the start of the campaign, the reason for his absence is unclear, albeit while having reportedly been exiled due to his failure to pen a new deal.

The Villans are seemingly in a real battle to keep the talented young striker. His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and it was reported at the end of last term that European heavyweights Inter Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Feyenoord are all interested in signing him.

Well, the West Midlands side arguably cannot face a repeat of the Duran situation. Wilson could be their long-term replacement for the Colombian, and giving him first-team chances could be the persuasion he needs to extend his stay at Villa Park.

There is no doubt he is a talented player, and if Emery’s side can keep hold of him beyond this season, Villa might have one of the most exciting young strikers in Europe on their hands.

Man Utd tell Champions League club they will bid £50m to sign 25 y/o star

Manchester United have told a Champions League club that they are planning to make a big bid to sign one of their stars this summer.

Plans for new 100,000-seater Man Utd stadium revealed

The major breaking news coming out of Old Trafford recently has been the Red Devils’ plans to knock down the historic ground and build a new 100,000 capacity stadium.

Man Utd announced the plans in the week for a new arena that will be built close to the existing Old Trafford and is set to cost around £2bn.

Facts on Man Utd’s new stadium plans

Referred to as “New Trafford Stadium”

New Stretford End will have a capacity of 23,500

Stadium will be visible from the Peak District

5-10 years to build

Second largest stadium in Europe behind Nou Camp

Will be tallest building in Manchester

Images of the planned new stadium show three masts described as “the trident” and are set to be 200m high and visible from 25 miles away. The club are hoping the stadium can be built in just five years, although it is unclear how it will be financed, with United currently £1bn in debt.

Talking about the plans for the new stadium, chief executive Omar Berrada said: “Our long-term objective as a club is to have the world’s best football team playing in the world’s best stadium. We are grateful for the feasibility work done by the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force exploring options for the future of Old Trafford.

“We have carefully considered its findings, together with the views of thousands of fans and local residents and concluded that a new stadium is the right way forward for Manchester United and our surrounding community. We will now embark on further consultation to ensure that fans and residents continue to be heard as we move towards final decisions.”

The new stadium may also impact spending on the squad, however, a number of players continue to be linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer ahead of Ruben Amorim’s first full season in charge.

One of those targets is Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who Man Utd recently made a new approach for after interest in 2024. Now, a fresh update has emerged on the Brazilian and a potential move to England.

Man Utd tell Atalanta they are bidding £50m for Ederson

According to reports from Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Atalanta, who played in this season’s Champions League, are trying to renew Ederson’s contract, however, the player is alerted by interest elsewhere.

One of those clubs is Man Utd, who have told Atalanta that a ‘€60m offer is coming’ and Ederson is fascinated by the idea of playing in the Premier League.

Juventus are also keen on the Serie A star, but it is Man Utd who are best placed to sign the 25-year-old, with the £50m pending bid potentially set to be enough.

Ederson has been among Atalanta’s best performers this season, with a WhoScored average match rating of 6.98/10. No Atalanta player is fouled more than Ederson per game, and by the looks of things, he could be a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen or Casemiro at Old Trafford.

McCullum: 'Naive' to think players would turn down longterm franchise deals

England Test coach says boards must “work with leagues” so best players remain available for international cricket

England Test head coach Brendon McCullum believes international boards, including the ECB, would be “completely naive” to assume their stars would turn down longterm franchise contracts.Recent reports have suggested that IPL teams are in talks with a number of English cricketers to sign annual deals. Given their investments across other tournaments such as the CPL, SA20, ILT20, Abu Dhabi T10 and the upcoming Major League Cricket in the United States, franchise owners have been working towards a situation where they can extend control over their most valuable assets beyond three months of the year.At the time of writing, it is understood no formal offers have been made to English players. However, Test nations such as South Africa and West Indies have long been at the mercy of franchise competitions when it comes to controlling the movement of their own players, and it seems only a matter of time before the likes of Australia and England must face a similar reality.Related

McCullum puts faith in CSK to keep Stokes' Ashes ambitions on track

Key: 'I thought, what's the worst that could happen?'

Welcome to the IPL, England-style

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, England men’s managing director Rob Key spoke of boards needing to work with players regarding franchise competitions for their own good: “You’re never going to compete financially with these competitions. So you’ve got to try and find a way to actually make sure that you do retain control of those players.”Speaking to SENZ Radio in New Zealand, McCullum echoed those sentiments, urging professional empathy in a fast-changing landscape.”The last few years, there’s been a shifting of the sand somewhat around international cricket,” McCullum said.”We’d be completely naive to think that players would turn down huge amounts of money on longterm contracts for a lot less work in these T20 leagues because they should be playing international cricket. Those days are fast approaching to be over. It’s definitely a shifting landscape and you’ve just got to be fluid.”What you’ve got to do is you’ve got to work with these players, you got to work with these leagues and try and allow, ideally, players to have their cake and eat it too because you want your best players playing.”The ECB’s more open approach when it comes to the IPL is reflective of the fact it sees no gain in maintaining England’s early antagonism to the competition. This year’s edition has seen a record 17 Englishman contracted, most notably Test skipper Ben Stokes, Sam Curran and Harry Brook, who all signed on seven-figure deals.Brook, who has taken Test cricket by storm, is currently on an incremental contract with the ECB, earning around £60,000 (US$75,000) for representing England. That his deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad is £1.3 million (US$1.6 million) speaks of the disparity. While it is due to be rectified in the next round of central contract handouts at the end of the summer, particularly given Brook’s role as a multi-format batter, it is unlikely to be more than the eye-catching figure of his first IPL season.McCullum, however, does not anticipate a situation where he will not be able to call upon his best Test players in the near future. Indeed, he feels making international cricket a more enjoyable and meaningful experience can be an easy remedy as opposed to adopting a hardline stance on those who want to indulge in franchise cricket.”How much fun they’ve had, how much those experiences which they’ve been able to get in an England shirt is so great that they are prepared to continue to put their yards [in] even though it might not be as financially viable as some of the other leagues,” McCullum said.”I think we are a little bit lucky, too, because the amount of money that we can pay players is better than some of the other boards around the world. It’s not good enough to say ‘You know what, if they don’t want to play international cricket for us, then bugger them, we’ll move on and find someone different’.”As a spectator, you want to see the best players in the world representing their countries.”
