Duo share six wickets between them as Bas de Leede’s half-century goes in vain

Nottinghamshire 187 for 7 (Munro 49, Sowter 4-29) beat Durham 161 for 9 (de Leede 58, Patel 3-30, Ball 3-38) by 26 runsNotts Outlaws took at least temporary possession of top spot in a tightly bunched North Group as they deposed Durham with a 26-run win in the Vitality Blast at Trent Bridge.Despite Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede hitting 58 from 41 balls to be top scorer on the night, from the halfway stage of their innings Durham never looked likely to get close to a target of 188 with Samit Patel’s 3 for 30, Jake Ball’s 3 for 38 and Matt Carter’s 2 for 25 leading an impressive performance in the field by the home side.Leg-spinner Nathan Sowter raised his tally to 17 wickets as the North Group’s leading wicket-taker, finishing with 4 for 29, as the Outlaws built on an 82-run second-wicket stand between Colin Munro and Alex Hales, with middle-order runs from Patel and Steven Mullaney pushing them up to 187 for 7.Durham opted to field first and picked up an immediate dividend when left-arm spinner Liam Trevaskis bowled Joe Clarke with the second ball of the match but that was the limit of their success in the powerplay as Notts powered to 65 for 1 with Hales 33 from 19 balls and Munro on 29 from 17, Hales having hit Brandon Glover over long-off for the first six of the night, Munro dishing out similar treatment to Wayne Parnell. The introduction of Sowter’s leg-spin ended the Hales assault, his compatriot Ashton Turner taking a good diving catch on the long-on boundary. The Australian-born bowler struck again in his second over as Matt Montgomery was leg before reverse sweeping, he and Ben Raine dragging back the scoring rate as the Outlaws’ innings reached halfway at 98 for 3.Sowter, continuing in the fine form he has shown throughout this season, dealt the home side a third major blow as Munro, having just driven him to the rope to move within one run of a half-century, did not quite get enough on his next attempt to find the boundary, Turner taking a second catch, at long-off. Notts were grateful that Trevaskis couldn’t hold on to a stinging return catch offered by Tom Moores on one as they moved to 139 for 4 from 15.The Outlaws needed a strong finish and Moores signalled his intention to provide it by hammering Sowter over long-on for six, only to become a third victim to the Sowter-Turner combination as the leg-spinner picked up a fourth scalp for the second match running. De Leede bowled Patel for 28 from 26 three balls later but skipper Mullaney’s 21 from 13 balls ensured Durham would need to score at more than nine an over.It was closer to 10s at the end of Durham’s batting powerplay, from which they emerged with 52 runs but three wickets lost after Alex Lees, who had cleared the rope off Shaheen Shah Afridi in a 13-run opening over, reverse swept Patel’s left-arm spin to short fine leg, Graham Clark holed out to deep mid-wicket off Carter’s off spin and Michael Jones was well held by a back-peddling mid-off from Ball’s first delivery.Durham looked on course to be up with the pace at the halfway stage but suffered a double setback in the 10th over that handed the initiative to Notts as Patel struck twice in three balls, bowling Robinson and having Turner caught second ball as he tried and failed to clear the boundary at wide long-on. Carter then turned 80 for 5 into 91 for 6 in the next over as Parnell, who had finished the 10th over with a straight six, chipped him straight to extra cover, putting the visitors firmly on the back foot.De Leede landed a couple of meaty strikes to move into the 40s but as the last five overs arrived, Durham needed a few more, with 68 required from 30 balls, but continued to lose wickets, Trevaskis out trying to paddle-scoop Ball before De Leede – missed earlier when Afridi seemed to lose the ball in the floodlights – hit the Pakistan international to Mullaney at extra cover. Ben Raine then found Hales on the long-on boundary as Ball claimed his third wicket, leaving an unlikely 31 required from the last over, with nine down, as Durham slid to an eighth consecutive Blast defeat against the Outlaws.
Arsenal have now held talks with the agents of a “fantastic” Premier League player, with a view to a potential summer transfer swoop, according to a report.
Gunners' striker search continues
At this stage, a whole host of Europe’s top strikers have been linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium, with Mikel Arteta keen on bringing in a new forward, who could usurp Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus in the starting XI.
However, Arteta’s number one target remains Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, and there was recently a boost in the Gunners’ pursuit of the Swedish forward, with it being revealed he has now expressed a desire to move to north London this summer.

Arsenal are stepping up their search for a new centre-forward
ByRobbie Walls Mar 29, 2025
Isak would be a real statement signing, given the impact he has made at St. James’ Park this season, netting 19 Premier League goals, but Arteta’s side are also running the rule over some talented young English strikers.
Blackburn Rovers striker Harvey Higgins is the latest forward to be shortlisted, with the north Londoners planning an imminent move for the 16-year-old, while they have also made the first move towards signing Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
That is according to a report from The Boot Room, which states Arsenal have now held talks with Delap’s representatives, having been impressed by how confident the Ipswich striker is.
Liam Delap against Manchester United for Ipswich Town.
Ipswich are looking to receive £40m for the forward, and there is widespread interest in his signature, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur making contact with his agents, while Newcastle United are also keen.
With Ipswich looking likely to be relegated from the top flight, the Englishman would be interested in a move to any of the interested clubs and believes he will be able to make an impact wherever he ends up.
"Fantastic" Delap enjoying impressive campaign
The Tractor Boys look set for an instant return to the Championship, currently sitting nine points adrift of safety, but their fate may have been sealed a long time ago if it wasn’t for Delap’s attacking contributions.
The 22-year-old has 10 goals to his name in the Premier League this term, which is an impressive total, given that he is in a struggling side, and he received high praise from Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.
“Fantastic player. He’s working hard off the ball. On the ball he understands the game. He can be an important player for England.”
The Ipswich star has shown some very promising signs this season, with his goal return indicating he could be a suitable alternative to Isak, but incoming sporting director Andrea Berta hasn’t given up on signing the Newcastle talisman.
Arsenal are set to make an “important proposal” for the 25-year-old this summer, and it would be a real statement of intent if they were able to get a deal over the line.

It’s been an especially long international break for Celtic supporters, having seen their side beaten 3-2 by fierce rivals Rangers in the Old Firm derby a fortnight ago, the visitors’ winner coming right at the end.
Nevertheless, Brendan Rodgers’ side remain 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership with only eight fixtures still to play, while they’re also on course for a sixth treble in nine seasons, set to face St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup semis on Easter Sunday.
Before then, Heart of Midlothian visit Parkhead on Saturday, with Rodgers expected to make numerous changes to his lineup, including unleashing a highly-rated but less-spotted youngster.
The latest on Paulo Bernardo's fitness
Midfielder Paulo Bernardo has not been seen since 8 February, sitting out eight matches due to an ankle injury suffered against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup.
Before then, the Portuguese U21 international had featured in 36 of Celtic’s 39 fixtures this season, underlining his importance, and he cannot wait to be back.
Speaking during a pre-Hearts press conference, Bernardo said “I can play football again, so I’m really excited”, adding “the injury was bad, but I recovered very well”.
While the midfielder himself admits he’s unlikely to be able to complete 90 minutes, given that Rodgers labeled him “important” and a “quality player”, he’s highly likely to see some playing time.
However, he’s not the only 23-year-old hoping to come into Saturday’s starting lineup, with a forgotten summer signing also poised for a rare run-out.
Celtic's forgotten man could start vs Hearts
During last Sunday’s Nations League quarter-final between Denmark and Portugal at Estádio José Alvalade, Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel suffered a shoulder injury.
Denmark manager Brian Riemer told Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet he expects Schmeichel to be sidelined “for the foreseeable future”, adding “he will not play this weekend”.
This is a major blow because, as noted by Matthew Campbell, Schmeichel has been ‘outstanding’ since arriving from Anderlecht last summer, so much so that he’s been rewarded with a new contract, despite the fact he’s now 38 years old.
In his absence, Viljami Sinisalo will be donning the gloves against Hearts, making just his second appearance for the club, having debuted against Raith in the Scottish Cup last month.
The Finnish international arrived from Aston Villa for a reported fee of £1m last summer, with Rodgers describing him as “a keeper with real qualities”.
Meanwhile, Scotland international midfielder John McGinn, Sinisalo’s former teammate at Villa, believes he is “different class”, adding “he was a big lad but agile… he really made an impression”.
So let’s assess his career so far.

Of course, Celtic supporters have barely got to see anything of Sinisalo so far, although his statistics are encouraging.
While on loan at Exeter last season, he ranked fifth for saves and 12th for save percentage in EFL League One, impressive statistics considering Gary Caldwell’s Grecians finished 13th.
Thus, if nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see how he performs against Hearts on Saturday, desperate to stake a claim while Schmeichel is sidelined.

Bryony Smith seals victory with three wickets as visitors are bowled out in a thriller

Bryony Smith celebrates a wicket with her South East Stars team-mates•Getty Images
South East Stars have beaten Central Sparks by six runs in a Charlotte Edwards Cup thriller at Canterbury.Katie George made 53, but needing to hit seven from the last four balls she was caught on the boundary by Claudie Cooper off Bryony Smith, leaving the Sparks all out for 170, with Abigail Freeborn unable to bat due to injury. The Stars had made their highest score of the season, 176 for 6, despite an impressive display by stand-in Sparks captain Georgia Davis, who took 3 for 13. Phoebe Franklin, who’d been awarded the PCA player-of-the-month trophy before the game, blasted 52 from 27 balls and captain Smith made 47.Neither side able was to qualify for Finals Day and both were missing key players through injury and England commitments, but it was a compelling contest that fluctuated almost constantly. After choosing to bowl, the Sparks produced a fielding performance that was a mixture of the brilliant and the ordinary.Chloe Hill could have been out first ball, but after skying Ellie Anderson she was dropped by Freeborn who, given the cloud cover, was trying to catch a white ball against a white background.Smith was on 20 when she offered a regulation chance to Erin Burns. The fielder put her down but subsequently atoned with a brilliant diving effort to get rid of Smith as she was poised for her half-century.Hill was the next to go, caught-and-bowled by Davis for 25 and Charis Pavely then took a brave catch to remove Aylish Cranstone after she’d holed out to Anderson, nearly colliding with Burns in the process.Kira Chathli went for 11 when she hit Bethan Ellis to Chloe Brewer and Davis concluded a superb spell when she bowled Franklin.Ryana MacDonald-Gay drove Ellis to Burns for five in the final over, but although the rate dipped it was still the Star’s highest score of the competition so far.The Sparks’ chase misfired in the second over when Ami Campbell was sent back by fellow opener Ellis chasing a second run that wasn’t really there and she was run out after a smart throw by Hill, but Ellis responded with an enterprising innings, partnered by Davina Perrin.Perrin struck an elegant 25, only to fall to an inelegant swipe off MacDonald-Gay which was caught at point by Aylish Cranstone.Danni Gregory swung the momentum back in the Stars’ favour, removing Ellis for 29 when she pulled her to Tash Farrant at square leg off the final ball of the ninth. Although Burns hit 16 off the tenth over, Gregory then bowled Brewer for a golden duck.George blocked the hat-trick ball and began scoring so freely that the Sparks seemed to be coasting until Smith brought herself back on at the Pavilion End and immediately claimed the key wicket of Burns for 39.Smith then bowled Pavely but as long as George was at the crease the Sparks looked slight favourites. They needed 26 from the final three and 17 from the last two, but home hopes soared when Cooper had Anderson lbw for 5.George declined a single off the last ball of the over, backing herself to get 10 off the final six balls. The first went for two after a misfield. The tension was ramped up when Cooper then dropped George but ran out Baker who was chasing a second.George drove the third ball to Cooper in almost exactly the same place, but this time the fielder held on to seal an exhilarating win.

Lewis Gregory’s unbeaten half-century saw Somerset home•Getty Images
Lewis Gregory and Ben Green batted Somerset into Finals Day of the Vitality Blast as the hosts completed a thrilling five-wicket victory over Notts Outlaws at Taunton. The Outlaws posted what looked a below par total of 157 for 6 after winning the toss, Matthew Montgomery top-scoring with 51 off 38 balls, Imad Wasim cracking 31 not out off 15 and Samit Patel contributing 30. Craig Overton claimed 2 for 23, while legspinner Ish Sodhi conceded only 22 from four overs.Somerset lost five wickets by the midway point of their reply before Gregory and Green put together an unbroken partnership of 96 to see their side to Edgbaston with three balls to spare.A big moment in the game came as early as the fourth delivery, Notts opener Alex Hales advancing to Overton and making room for a big shot, only to have his stumps scattered. Overton soon followed up by having the dangerous Colin Munro brilliantly caught by the back-peddling Matt Henry at mid-off.Henry then had Joe Clarke pouched at midwicket by Overton to make it 17 for 3 and although Montgomery and Patel took boundaries off the sixth over, bowled by Jack Brooks, the Outlaws ended the powerplay on 37 for 3.Patel pulled a six off Gregory as 14 came off the ninth over. He and Montgomery had taken their stand to 69 when the 13th over saw Patel bowled trying to swing Gregory into the leg side.Montgomery survived a tough chance to Tom Abell in the outfield to bring up his half-century, but the next ball saw him sky another catch and Overton made no mistake running in from long-off.Tom Moores was caught at short fine-leg off Gregory and after Sodhi’s economic contribution, it was left to Wasim and skipper Steven Mullaney to boost a meagre Notts total with some clean hitting in the final overs. Wasim struck a six and two fours in his entertaining cameo, but the Outlaws looked to face an uphill battle at the halfway stage.Their spirits were lifted when Tom Banton was caught behind reverse-sweeping off the first ball of the second over of Somerset’s innings, sent down by Wasim, the umpire’s decision of not out being reversed after a referral. It was 9 for 2 when the left-arm spinner completed a double-wicket maiden by clean bowling Tom Kohler-Cadmore for a duck.Smeed responded by hitting boundaries off the first three balls of Wasim’s second over. Abell produced three sweetly-struck fours of his own as the pair took Somerset to 44 for 2 by the end of the powerplay. The pair had added 46 when Abell played a ball from Calvin Harrison into the leg side and Smeed called for a second run, only to fall short as Hales produced a fast throw to the bowler’s end.Soon afterwards, Sean Dickson fell lbw to Harrison reverse-sweeping and Abell walked after under-edging a catch behind in the same over. At the halfway stage of their innings, Somerset were 62 for 5.The experienced Gregory then took charge, clearing the ropes off Patel twice and Wasim as he and Green, who smashed Harrison over long-on for six, repaired the damage in style, bringing up a half-century stand off 35 balls.Thirty were needed off the last three overs. Gregory brought a packed crowd to their feet with a six over midwicket off Wasim and went to a brilliant 32-ball fifty with another maximum over long-off in the penultimate over, delivered by Jake Ball, to finally break Notts’ resistance. With three needed, Green appeared to be dropped at cover off Fletcher. But it was a no-ball and the resulting free hit was dispatched for the winning runs.
