Chelsea's "future Ballon d'Or winner" is worth more than Pedro & Gittens

Chelsea’s late winner against Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-final saw them secure a place in the last four of the competition.

Enzo Maresca’s side now stand just two wins away from the trophy and a winners prize of around $125m.

This would certainly help boost their summer spending spree, although Maresca has already been busy during the tournament.

Indeed, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Mamadou Sarr have all made the move to the Blues recently.

The deals for Pedro and Gittens represent the biggest financial outlay, but will the pair live up to the hype?

What Chelsea paid to sign Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens

Gittens has long been on the club’s radar. They had a bid rejected for him last month, but Maresca submitted an improved £48.5m offer which was accepted by Borussia Dortmund.

Last season, he registered 17 goal involvements in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit. He fell out of favour once Niko Kovac became coach, but there is no doubt he will offer plenty to the Blues next term.

Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittensin action with Lille's Bafode Diakite

Pedro could also turn out to be a superb addition to the squad. He was more expensive than Gittens, with the Stamford Bridge side splashing £60m on the Brazilian.

He scored ten Premier League goals last season for Brighton and knows the top flight well, meaning the 23-year-old should settle in nicely at the club.

Should both these players perform at their best under Maresca next season, Chelsea will be a force to watch out for.

Especially when they already have a player who is worth more than the pair of them.

Chelsea have already struck gold on Estevao

Estevao played his final game for Palmeiras in the Club World Cup and fittingly, it came against Chelsea, the side he is set to join shortly.

The Blues agreed a £29m deal to sign the youngster last summer, but now the club will finally get to see him in action.

He netted against his future employers in the quarter-final defeat, giving the supporters a potential glimpse into the future.

Despite his tender age, the winger has made over 80 senior appearances for the Brazilian side, registering 42 goal contributions in the process.

The teenager has received some wonderful praise during the embryonic stages of his career thus far. Analyst Ben Mattinson believes he is a “future Ballon d’Or winner” while already going as far as to say that he is a “superstar” thanks to his early displays for Brazilian side Palmeiras.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Estevao is currently valued at around €96m (£83m), which means he is worth more than both Gittens and Pedro based on their respective transfer fees.

This is staggering, especially considering the teenager has yet to play a game for Chelsea. Judging by his performance for Palmeiras against the Premier League side, he could turn out to be a truly wonderful signing.

Atkinson four-for highlights 13-wicket opening day

Wood and Woakes also got among the wickets to bowl out WI for 282 but Seales struck late in the day to keep England at bay

Flashes of West Indies fight saw them end the opening day of the third Test at Edgbaston just about even with England, but the tourists’ challenge is to turn the glimmers of hope they’ve shown since the start of the second Test into match-turning moments.Fifties from Kraigg Brathwaite and Jason Holder led what appeared to be a below-par first innings 282 in the face of some excellent bowling by Gus Atkinson and Chris Woakes. But then Jayden Seales grabbed two of the three England wickets to fall late on a day that yielded 13 in all to level things up.West Indies’ spirited first innings at Trent Bridge, which put them narrowly in front of England, momentarily erased memories of their capitulation at Lord’s. But their second-innings collapse in the second Test relegated all their good work to hope-for-the-future status and much of this first day’s play of the third Test felt like mini versions of that story.Related

Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis’ 76-run opening stand preceded a collapse of 5 for 39 in 7.2 overs. Then there was the sixth-wicket union between Holder and Joshua Da Silva, worth 109, undone by Woakes and Atkinson rediscovering the swing which had disappeared for part of the day.But there was a twist, with both England openers removed with consecutive balls and nightwatcher Mark Wood also falling as the home side went to the close on 38 for 3, trailing by 244 runs.Seales had Zak Crawley out edging to Holder with his 12th ball and Alzarri Joseph, who had spilled a return catch off Ben Duckett in the previous over, had him out chopping onto his stumps with the first ball of his next. Wood followed, edging Seales to Holder at second slip as England were given plenty to think about overnight. With the ball 61 overs old and the pitch unresponsive, Woakes conjured enough movement to be hopeful with a fuller one angling down the leg side which beat Da Silva and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who parried it away for four byes. With the next, he rapped Da Silva’s front pad with another fullish delivery that looked as though it was going down the leg side.Jason Holder raised a battling half-century•Getty Images

Then, bingo. Woakes enticed a loose waft from Da Silva with a back-of-a-length delivery that pitched outside off and then moved away from the right-hander as he looked to thread it through backward point but instead edged to Smith one run shy of his half-century. It was a crucial wicket for England after West Indies had recovered from 115 for 5.From there, Woakes had the ball properly swinging again, and he grabbed his third wicket with an outswinger which Alzarri Joseph skied straight to Ben Stokes at mid-off.Atkinson chimed in with his third, a beauty to remove Holder, the ball pitching on middle and swinging away as the batter tried to play across the line and had his off stump dislodged. Holder’s slow-motion trudge off the field was the perfect illustration of West Indies’ mood at that point.Atkinson then removed Gudakesh Motie with a short ball which had the batter ducking and thrusting his bat above his head, the ball sailing over a jumping Smith as Joe Root took a stunner diving across from slip and flinging out his hand, where the ball miraculously stuck.Shoaib Bashir, the off-spinning star of England’s second-Test victory took the last wicket when Shamar Joseph hit high down the ground and Crawley, running round from long-off, took the catch.Earlier, Louis had faced 22 balls to get off the mark, striking Atkinson through cover point and running two. But, after the first hour, West Indies were 49 without loss, having won the toss.Brathwaite moved to 49 guiding a full Stokes delivery past point and brought up his half-century with a single next ball. It was his first fifty in nine Test innings since July last year.Mark Wood’s searing yorker flattened Kirk McKenzie’s middle stump•Getty Images

But Atkinson made the initial breakthrough, drawing an edge with a short ball that was moving away as Louis prodded behind to Smith. For the fifth time in as many Tests innings in his fledgling career, Louis reached double figures but he is yet to pass the 27 he made on debut in the first match of this series at Lord’s.Wood’s pace wasn’t quite what it was at Trent Bridge but it caused West Indies enough problems.Brathwaite was left doubled up after a nasty knock to the box by a short ball. Then, after Kirk McKenzie had struck three boundaries in four Atkinson deliveries, Wood removed him for 12 in his next over, flattening his middle stump with a 91mph inswinging yorker.Atkinson grabbed his second wicket on the stroke of lunch as Alick Athanaze bottom-edged a short ball which stayed low onto his off stump and West Indies went to lunch at 97 for 3.Two early wickets in the afternoon session kept the hosts on top. Brathwaite had added just five runs after lunch before he was caught behind down the leg side attempting a pull shot off a Wood shorter ball. Adding to West Indies’ woes, replays suggested that the catch had come off Brathwaite’s right glove, which was off the bat handle at the time.Just two balls later, Kavem Hodge errantly left a Woakes delivery which angled in towards middle and off stumps and straightened slightly to crash into the top of off.

Darcie Brown has recovered from a stress fracture of the foot to take her place in Australia’s 15-player squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 which has been moved to the UAE from Bangladesh.Meanwhile, Jess Jonassen, who was left out of the tour of Bangladesh earlier this year, misses a World Cup for the first time when she has been available for selection. It is a very settled squad of 15, led by Alyssa Healy, as Australia look to make it four T20 World Cup titles in a row. Brown will be joined by Tayla Vlaeminck in providing Australia two bowlers with extra pace. Phoebe Litchfield will be playing her first T20 World Cup.”This is the first time in a long time we’ve had our entire contract list available for selection ahead of a World Cup and it’s resulted in a really stable and balanced squad,” national selector Shawn Flegler said. “It’s the first time Alyssa will have the reins at a World Cup and we’ve already seen what her and Tahlia bring from a leadership perspective, so it’s exciting for them to have this opportunity to lead their country on the biggest stage.”Pheobe is a real x-factor for us and will be well supported by an experienced group at her first World Cup. The pace duo of Tayla and Darcie is one we’ve been wanting to unleash for a while and is a real point of difference for us.”Related

Nottingham Forest register interest in race to sign "special" £25m winger

Nottingham Forest have now joined the race to sign a “special” £25 million international winger, according to a new report.

Nottingham Forest in contact to sign new striker after Jesus

The Reds have made two signings so far this summer, both of whom arrived from Brazilian side Botafogo. But given the club are looking to go deep into the UEFA Conference League as well as achieve further success in the Premier League, then Nuno Espirito Santo will be wanting more arrivals before the Premier League season gets underway.

Nottingham Forest among frontrunners for £20m+ Elanga replacement after talks

The Reds are progressing in talks to sign a player who will replace the departed Anthony Elanga.

1 ByBrett Worthington Jul 13, 2025

Igor Jesus, who is a striker, is one of the two players to arrive at the City Ground this summer, and he will join Chris Wood, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Emmanuel Dennis as the contracted forwards at Forest, but the latter could be free to leave the club given he has fallen down the pecking order. Meanwhile, Awoniyi’s return to action is unknown, and therefore, Forest are in the market for another centre-forward.

Inter Milan's Mehdi Taremi in action with Lazio'sMarioGila

According to recent reports abroad, Forest have made contact with Inter Milan over the signing of Mehdi Taremi. Fulham and Turkish outfit Besiktas were already in the race to sign Taremi, but the Reds have now added his name to the list, with all three teams making contact with Inter but are now waiting for the striker to decide his next move. He could cost any side as much as £6.8 million.

Nottingham Forest join Everton in race to sign "special" £25m winger

As well as looking at new forward options, the Reds are also looking at who could replace Anthony Elanga, and according to The Express, Forest have registered their interest in signing Ben Doak from Liverpool.

Unfortunately for Forest, they are not the only team from the Premier League interested in the winger, as Doak is a “leading target” for Everton, as they have made an enquiry, but the likes of Bournemouth and Crystal Palace have also submitted enquiries about signing Doak.

It goes on to add that Doak, who has earned six caps for Scotland to date, would be open to leaving Anfield this summer, after returning from his loan spell at Middlesbrough. The 19-year-old is out of contract next summer, and therefore, Liverpool could be open to letting Doak leave, should they receive an offer worth £25 million.

This is despite the fact he has played just 10 times for the Premier League champions, but Liverpool will see his loan spell at Boro as a productive campaign, as he scored three goals in 24 league games.

Doak is a player who is admired by a lot of clubs, and it may not come as much of a surprise, given former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp labelled Doak “special”. Klopp said: “Special boy. Ponting tips Australia to beat India 3-1 in Border Gavaskar Trophy

Former Australia captain says that Steven Smith should make the call on whether he should open for Australia in Tests

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Aug-2024

Ricky Ponting has tipped Australia to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India later this year by a 3-1 margin. He said the hosts will have a “bit of a point to prove” after losing their previous two home Test series to India 2-1 in 2018-19 and 2020-21. Australia have not beaten India in a Test series since 2014-15.”It’s going to be a competitive series and, as I said, I think Australia’s got a bit of a point to prove against India in Australia on the back of what’s happened the last two series here,” Ponting said on the . “We are back to five Tests as well, which is the other really important thing about this series. It’s only been four Tests the last couple of times. Five tests, I think everyone’s really excited by that and I don’t know if there’d be too many drawn games.”I’m obviously going to tip Australia to win and I’m never going to tip against Australia. There will be a draw somewhere and there will be some bad weather somewhere, so I’m going to say 3-1 to Australia.”Should Steven Smith continue to open?Ponting said the Australian side would “pretty much pick itself” but he wasn’t sure whether Steven Smith should continue to open or not, after the spot was left vacant by David Warner’s retirement at the SCG earlier this year.”Probably the only one question there might be with Australia again, is if Smith’s the right man to be opening the batting. That would be the only query that I can see there. But that was all about obviously bringing Cameron Green back into the side.”So I’ll rephrase it, not whether Smith’s the right man to open the batting but whether he thinks it’s the right spot for him. Because I think if he doesn’t think it’s the right spot then they’ll make a change and get someone else back up there.”In his last Test series, in New Zealand in March, Smith scored just 51 runs in four innings while opening. His promotion to the top after Warner retired was to also accommodate Cameron Green in the XI, which paid dividends when Green was the top scorer on the tour with 238 runs in four innings including a career-best 174 not out in Wellington.Though the sample size is small – eight innings as opener – the numbers aren’t in Smith’s favour. Apart from a high score of 91 against West Indies at the Gabba this year, he has passed 30 only once and averages 28.50.

West Ham in talks to sign £35m Spurs target who's tempted by Hammers move

West Ham United have now opened talks to sign a “phenomenal” Tottenham Hotspur target, who is tempted by a move to the London Stadium this summer, according to a report.

West Ham looking to get revenge for Kudus

It will, of course, be a huge disappointment that Mohammed Kudus decided to join one of West Ham’s biggest rivals, and the forward has continued to make the headlines since sealing a move across the capital.

Upon arriving in north London, Kudus insisted he “only wanted Spurs” in his first interview, and there could be justified anger about the way in which he went about getting the move in the first place, having allegedly refused to return to pre-season training.

Losing a player of the winger’s quality to one of their bitter rivals will be a bitter pill for Hammers fans to swallow, but there has now been a suggestion that they could get instant revenge by swooping in and signing one of Tottenham’s transfer targets.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), West Ham have now entered negotiations to sign Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, and they are more determined to get a deal over the line than any other club in the race for his signature.

Luiz is also on Spurs’ transfer shortlist, with reports suggesting the midfielder would be keen on a move to north London, however, it has now been revealed that he is tempted by a move to the London Stadium, with the Irons currently working to find an agreement.

A deal will not be cheap, with Juventus setting an asking price of €40m (£35m), but the Italian club are also open to more creative ways of getting the Brazilian off the books, with an expensive loan also on the table, including an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

"Phenomenal" Luiz could be statement signing for West Ham

Of course, it will be difficult to compete with Tottenham, given that Champions League football is on offer in north London next season, but the Juventus maestro could be a real statement signing if the Hammers are able to get a deal over the line.

Crucially, the former Aston Villa man is already proven in the Premier League, catching pundit Lee Hendrie’s eye during his spell at Villa Park.

Douglas Luiz at the Club World Cup with Juventus.

Hendrie said: “He continues to have an absolutely unbelievable season doesn’t he, scoring goals? But that’s his bread and butter, getting back, doing the horrible side of the game and having quality amongst that is absolutely phenomenal.”

As pointed out by Hendrie, the 27-year-old is a very well-rounded midfielder, having particularly impressed going forward in his final season with Villa, regularly chipping in with goals and assists in all competitions.
