Sam Konstas hopes to embrace Sri Lanka challenge after heated India start

The 19-year-old opener was the centre of attention in his first two Tests and is now about to embark on his first tour

AAP14-Jan-20251:52

Smith: Konstas can bat conventionally too, he’s got ‘all the tools’

Sam Konstas has conceded his emotions got the better of him during his first Test series but the batting prodigy will keep backing himself on the tour of Sri Lanka.Konstas has not yet heard from selectors about their top-order plans for the two-Test series that begins on January 29, with Travis Head a chance to open after a fruitful shift to the top during Australia’s last subcontinent tour in 2023.Related

Konstas, Green and Andrews put Thunder in BBL playoffs

Usman Khawaja’s track record against spin and gutsy 41 runs in the series-deciding run chase against India are likely to factor into plans, as would the chance to give teenager Konstas his first taste of Test cricket abroad.”It’s obviously a huge honour representing my country and touring to Sri Lanka. They’ve welcomed me with open arms and I’m keen to learn and get better,” Konstas said. “Obviously we’ve got a strong squad. If I do get the opportunity [to open], hopefully I’ll take it with both hands.”Konstas won hearts and minds with his creative shot selection during his first two opportunities, opening alongside Khawaja in Test victories against India at the MCG and SCG. But his ongoing battle with seasoned Indian foes captured just as much attention.En route to a half-century in his first innings, Konstas found himself at the centre of drama after Virat Kohli barged into him between overs at the MCG.Sam Konstas made a crucial half-century in tricky conditions against Perth Scorchers•Getty Images

His decision to chirp at Jasprit Bumrah backfired late on day one in Sydney, with a posse of Indian players swarming him at the non-strikers end when Bumrah dismissed Khawaja despite Konstas’ attempts at time-wasting. Konstas expected it would be easier to remain level-headed in Sri Lanka.”It’s going to be completely different with the crowds, obviously,” he said. “It was the first time playing with big crowds and maybe the emotions got to me a bit, reflecting on it. But obviously Sri Lanka are going to be tough to beat in their home conditions. I’m looking forward to that.”There has been no shortage of punditry questioning Konstas’ high-risk approach to Test cricket, especially after the teenager slogged straight to a fielder in the all-important final chase at the SCG.But he will remain his confident self if given a chance in Sri Lanka, where he has previously travelled for a 10-day skills camp.”I feel like I’ll just keep backing myself. Obviously I’m going to adapt with my different methods. I can’t wait for that to happen,” he said.Konstas will have one last hit-out for Sydney Thunder against Sydney Sixers this Friday before flying out to Australia’s training camp in the UAEThe 19-year-old has made two half-centuries in his first four BBL knocks, including 53 runs in the defeat of Perth Scorchers that sealed Thunder’s spot in the finals on Monday night. He was not selected in Australia’s squad for the Champions Trophy, having played only one List A game, but is keen to become a fixture in international white-ball cricket as well as Tests.”That’s a dream come true hopefully but they [selectors] haven’t said anything,” he said. “I’m just focusing on tonight. We had a good win and we’re off to the Sixers. I’m just being in the present moment and trying to score some runs.”

Alan Shearer reacts to "ridiculous" latest Isak and Newcastle update

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer believes wantaway striker Alexander Isak needs to “sack” his agent immediately after his recent statement.

Isak and Newcastle transfer latest

The Swedish striker has been trying to force a move out of St James’ Park all summer but was frustrated earlier this month when the Magpies rejected an offer from Liverpool, reportedly worth £110m plus add-ons.

Liverpool Graphic

Isak missed Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa last weekend and looks set to be absent once again as the Reds visit St James’ Park on Monday evening.

Earlier in the week, Isak put out a statement, believing Newcastle have “broken” their promise this summer and the “trust is lost”.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To act now as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue.”

Newcastle responded by denying that Isak had been granted any assurances over a potential move. “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.”

The transfer window shuts on September 1, so there could be more to this transfer saga before the deadline, although Newcastle are now adamant selling Isak is now not possible, despite bidding for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.

Speaking this week, relayed by PA Media, Shearer said the situation is now an “absolute mess” as he pointed the finger at Isak’s agent Vlado Lemic.

Isak’s current contract runs until 2028, and with no release clause, Newcastle hold all the cards in the final days of the window.

'We had the game in our hand' – Masood calls for more ruthlessness from Pakistan to kill off Tests

“We must make sure we win the game rather than [allowing] the other team back into it”

Shan Masood lamented “the same mistakes” Pakistan keep making after they slipped to an eighth Test defeat on the trot in South Africa and their seventh in their last nine games. In a topsy-turvy game, the final twist belonged to South Africa as they recovered from an epic collapse that saw them lose four wickets for three runs to record an unbeaten 50-ball 51-run partnership that clinched victory by two wickets, and alongside it a berth in the World Test Championship final.”We had the game in our hand, whether with the bat or the ball,” Masood said. “I don’t have to add anything and sound like a broken record. [I’m] extremely proud of the efforts, but going forward as a team we need to be ruthless. We’ve been competing well in these conditions and I’ve said that before when we played in Australia in similar conditions. We had the game by the scruff of the neck and even here twice, we had them eight down and we thought we were in a reasonable position and even with the bat, when we could have extended our score in both innings.”Related

South Africa clinch two-wicket thriller to seal WTC final spot

WTC final scenarios: South Africa through, but what about India, Australia and Sri Lanka?

While Pakistan have not won in South Africa since 2007, they have never come as close as they did in this Test. But collapses with the bat in both innings – they lost 4 for 22 in the first innings and 7 for 84 in the second – were compounded by toothlessness in the field against the tail: South Africa’s ninth and tenth-wicket partnerships added a combined 139 across two innings for the loss of just two wickets.”All four innings [cost us]” Masood said. “We can only look at ourselves. You’re going to make mistakes over several days, but you need to have a cushion. I thought when it came to a time when we could get that cushion with the bat, first and third innings, or whether that was with the ball when we had them eight down on two occasions. We didn’t have that cushion, and then you get partnerships like Bosch’s innings and Rabada and Jansen, and you don’t have enough of a cushion to retain a winning position.”A failure to kill games off has been a familiar theme for Masood, one he has highlighted so often he was conscious of sounding “like a broken record”. In Australia, Pakistan found themselves in positions of dominance – or at least parity – in two of the three Tests, as well as in both games against Bangladesh. Pakistan have chopped and changed the personnel; the bowlers, coaches and selection panel have all been rejigged over this period. Masood maintained, though, that his team had the ability to get over the line.Shan Masood: I don’t have to add anything and sound like a broken record. [I’m] extremely proud of the efforts, but going forward as a team we need to be ruthless•AFP/Getty Images

“I don’t think it’s a quality issue. The quality is there, and we’ve seen it at various points. To be a top team, to be in South Africa’s place, to play a WTC final, these are the things where you have to be ruthless.”Sometimes you learn the hard way. You can’t use it as an excuse but the more we play Test cricket, the more people get into sync. A lot of the players were playing for the first time in these conditions. It can be a really hard lesson where you feel like you’ve got the other team under pressure, but you still need to finish the job.”It can also feel like we’ve got a really good partnership with Saud [Shakeel] and Babar [Azam], or Kamran [Ghulam] and [Mohammad] Rizwan, or me and Saim [Ayub] in both innings and you feel that you can take them on and have a great score. You’re never set in these conditions whether with the bat or the ball. We’re learning the hard way through a defeat, but the challenge is that we have to respond to this and make sure once we get into winning positions, we must make sure we win the game rather than bring the other team back into it.”There was still enough encouragement from the Pakistan captain to highlight the contributions he felt merited more. Mohammad Abbas, playing, at 34, his first Test in over three years, bowled 19.3 unbroken overs across the second innings as he scrapped to pull a victory out of the hat for Pakistan, registering career-best figures of 6 for 54 in the second innings. He is now three wickets away from 100, and has the best Test bowling average for a Pakistani in history (minimum 15 wickets).”The message is clear, age is just a number,” Masood said. “The disappointing thing is a performance like that should be on the winning side. I also thought Saud Shakeel’s innings [was excellent] – if we had batted a bit better with him – he would have got a hundred. Those two performances deserved to be on the winning side, and unfortunately they’re not.”

Tottenham now progressing in talks to sign £70m+ star, breakthrough imminent

Tottenham Hotspur are now progressing towards a spectacular deal to sign an “extraordinary forward”, and a swift breakthrough on personal terms is likely.

Tottenham vying to sign new winger

In many ways, it has been a difficult summer for Tottenham, having missed out on Eberechi Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White, leaving Daniel Levy with a lot of work to do before the transfer deadline, which is in less than one week’s time.

As we enter the final stages of the transfer window, Spurs appear to have three main targets on their transfer shortlist, all of whom enjoyed impressive 2024/25 campaigns.

However, it has proven to be difficult to get any deal over the line, with Real Madrid demanding around £86m for the Brazilian winger, while some Spurs chiefs are pessimistic about their chances of tempting Manchester City into a sale.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, however, a deal for Savinho is very much still on the cards, with talks now progressing, and Tottenham thundering towards what would be a spectacular signing.

The Lilywhites are in active talks over a deal for the 21-year-old, and Man City are now lining up a replacement, which suggests Pep Guardiola’s side will be willing to cash-in on the young winger before the September 1st deadline.

Spurs are looking to move ahead of their Premier League rivals in the race for a “pure baller.”

Crucially, the starlet is keen on a move to north London, in order to become a key part of Thomas Frank’s project, which means a swift breakthrough on personal terms is now likely, although not yet agreed.

With discussions over a £70m+ deal progressing, it is now looking more likely the Brazil international will move to N17 before the deadline, which could be a major boost for Frank…

Savinho could be "extraordinary" signing for Spurs

Guardiola has previously made it clear he doesn’t want to see the winger leave, saying: “I am only concerned right now that Savinho will be with us for the rest of the season and hopefully many years, because of the potential he has at 21. He has to improve in final positions but he is an extraordinary player.”

It is true that the former Girona man is still raw, and his end product could be a lot better, having scored just one Premier League goal up to this point, but an assist tally of ten in his debut campaign at the Etihad Stadium is very impressive.

Tottenham desperately need to bolster their attacking options, and Savinho is the most exciting option on the shortlist, given that he is still only 21-years-old, and he has already proven himself in the Premier League, so it is exciting news that a deal is now looking more likely.

West Ham now join the race to sign £60m star who was a major Spurs target

West Ham United have now joined the race to sign a “sensational” player in January, who was a major target for Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.

West Ham eyeing Paqueta replacements despite late twist

Lucas Paqueta’s West Ham future was a topic right the way through the transfer window, and Fabrizio Romano suggested the Brazilian was set to complete a late move to Aston Villa.

However, the Brazilian re-affirmed his commitment to the club by kissing the badge in celebration, after bagging the second goal from the penalty spot in the 3-0 rout of Nottingham Forest.

It appears as though the 28-year-old could be getting back to his best, having already scored three goals in all competitions this summer, but the Hammers have their eye on a potential replacement ahead of the January transfer window.

According to a report from Caught Offside, West Ham have now joined the race for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, who was a major target for Tottenham during the summer window, with the north Londoners activating his £60m release clause.

The move fell through, and Gibbs-White extended his contract with Forest, but a move could still be on the cards this summer, with the likes of Spurs, Newcastle United and Aston Villa also monitoring developments.

The Hammers’ interest is thought to be tied to the uncertainty over Paqueta’s future, as they are preparing contingency plans in case the Brazil international leaves this winter.

"Sensational" Gibbs-White would be statement signing for West Ham

In all honesty, it seems very unlikely the Hammers will be able to compete for the England international’s signature, given that he is currently at a Europa League side, with Champions League clubs also interested in a deal.

However, the 25-year-old would be a real statement signing if the Irons were able to pull it off, having been lauded as “sensational” by the BBC’s John Bennett for his performances in the Premier League in the 2024-25 campaign.

£25m "leader" said "no" to West Ham move after they made last-gasp approach

One of Graham Potter’s targets turned down a very late move to the London Stadium.

ByDominic Lund Sep 2, 2025

The Englishman vastly outperformed Paqueta in terms of attacking contributions, chipping in with 17 goal contributions, compared to just four from the former Lyon man.

However, having been cleared of spot-fixing charges by the FA, the West Ham star is now showing signs he is back to his best, most recently putting in a quality all-round performance to help steer his side to victory over Forest.

O Internacional recebe o América-MG, no Beira-Rio.

O jogo
