Agar: An in-form Kohli can leave bowlers massively frustrated

On ESPNcricinfo’s Match Day show, Agar said Kohli’s ability to rotate strike leaves bowlers with little chance to exert pressure

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Mar-2025Bowlers struggle to build pressure on Virat Kohli in ODI cricket, and one key reason for that is his ability to rotate the strike, Ashton Agar said on ESPNcricinfo’s Match Day show after the batter’s match-winning 84 in the first semi-final of the Champions Trophy in Dubai.Agar also said Kohli’s ability to manage the pressure from one end by finding the gaps makes him among the most difficult batters to bowl to in ODI cricket, and that combined with the other batters’ big shots makes it very difficult for teams to defend totals against India. Terming his innings as a “masterclass”, Agar said bowlers rarely feel like they’re on top of a batter of Kohli’s quality.”That’s the frustrating part about bowling to him,” Agar said in the post-match show on ESPNcricinfo. “It is not the damage that he can do to the fence, it’s just the fact that you cannot build pressure on him. So it’s really hard to get him out in a sense. You never really feel like you’re on top of him unless the ball is really spinning. And you don’t get a lot of pitches in one-day cricket like that.Related

Kohli conquers legspin to add new layer to his mystique

“He has this fantastic ability to hit your best ball, the top of middle stump, slightly spinning away, he holds the bat’s face slightly longer than other batters do, opens it in the last second, and hits it in the cover point gap. He’s probably the best in the world at doing that and he’s very difficult to build pressure on.”India batted around Virat beautifully. The guys who came in kept pushing the rate and allowed Virat to do his thing, hit the odd boundary and just keep ticking over. I saw a stat that Virat has scored the most singles since the year 2000, which is phenomenal. It was a bit of a masterclass from him and all the batters contributed nicely.”1:55

Kumble: Kohli always in control during chases

Kohli scored 64 of his 84 runs on Tuesday with ones and twos to slowly take the game away from Australia. Although he has been dismissed six times to legspinners since the start of 2024 for an average of only 12, he dominated Tanveer Sangha and Adam Zampa to score 35 in 33 balls against the leg-spinning pair before falling to the latter. Sanjay Manjrekar observed that Kohli was back to playing shots off the back foot.”Now you have five fielders inside the circle, so it’s not easy as it used to be – like during our times – when you had four fielders,” Manjrekar said. “Very rarely has he hit the ball straight to the fielder and hasn’t got a run.”So that one issue against spin that he had where he couldn’t rotate strike, hopefully that’s out of his system now. Because today was an affirmation that he is back to that very nice footwork, off the back foot playing late, finding gaps all the time. He was the best batter to find gaps from both sides [on Tuesday].Anil Kumble said he continued to be impressed by Kohli’s propensity to make tricky targets look easy.”He rarely makes a mistake,” Kumble said. “He’s totally in control. Especially in run chases. In a chase of around 265, he’s in total control except for the one chance to Maxwell. It’s not just this innings but every time he bats in a run chase, there’s hardly any loss in control. He’s always in control of this situation.”Kohli’s latest half-century marked his third 50-plus score in Champions Trophy semi-finals and his fifth in ICC knockout games. He is only one half-century away from Sachin Tendulkar’s record of six fifty-plus scores in ICC knockout games, while India are one more win away from making it two ICC titles in a row.

Worried Fleming says CSK are still 'grappling' to find their best line-up

Just four games into IPL 2025, CSK have tried 17 players and all seven overseas options in a bid to find a winning combination

Deivarayan Muthu05-Apr-20252:54

Fleming: CSK still ‘trying to get opening combination right’

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have responded to their early-season defeats – they have now lost three in a row in IPL 2025 – by ringing in the changes, but they are still struggling to find their best combination. It’s a “conundrum”. So says head coach Stephen Fleming, who is concerned by the lack of balance in the squad and the dearth of firepower in the batting line-up.Four games into IPL 2025, CSK have cycled through 17 players, including all seven overseas options, which is a departure from their usual strategy of continuity in selection. No other side has used as many players this season.”Yeah, that [finding the balance] is the conundrum at the moment,” Fleming said at the press conference after CSK’s loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday. “To get more solidity at the top we have to remove obviously an overseas player, so we’re grappling just with the combination that we need. When it doesn’t go right, you pore over it and analyse that and see if it was the right call.”Related

KL Rahul shines as DC outclass CSK in Chennai

CSK have the worst scoring rate in the powerplay among all ten teams this season at this stage, and in order to remedy that, they brought in Devon Conway and reunited him with Rachin Ravindra at the top at the expense of Rahul Tripathi against DC. They also swapped out allrounder Jamie Overton for an Indian seamer in Mukesh Choudhary. The changes didn’t work out, however, with Conway compounding CSK’s powerplay troubles with another low score and Choudhary leaking 50 runs in his wicketless spell of four overs.”We felt that our batting in the powerplays has been below par and going too hard was probably not the way, particularly on our wicket, which is a little bit tricky,” Fleming said. “So we’re looking just to settle that with guys that have been in good form and have done it before, so that’s the theory behind that and that’s what we’ll possibly continue with.”But it just comes down to run production. You can have all the tactics you like, if you’ve got a couple of players in form they can cover for others. But at the moment we’re just not quite getting the big individual scores we need so that the cameos can do their part; we’re getting starts but not quite enough.”After crashing to their biggest-ever defeat at Chepauk in terms of runs, in late March against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), CSK seemed dreadfully off the pace and out of depth in another chase, this time against DC in a day game on Saturday. They managed only 69 for 4 in ten overs in pursuit of 184, and by the time MS Dhoni walked out to bat in the next over, the asking rate had almost touched 12. Vijay Shankar had a particularly tortured stay in the middle while Dhoni also failed to bring out the big hits in the face of a mounting asking rate.”The attempt was that we went out… a combination of they bowled well, I think the ball started to grip a little bit more,” Fleming said. “Well, we understood it was going to be good for the first half and then gradually get slower, so we were keen to bat and then take pace off the ball and they did it really well. Vijay Shankar struggled to get timing all the way through his innings. But that period from 12 to 16 was difficult for all, it was tough to watch and certainly tough to be out there, so the game was just slipping away and even with intent and different methods to do it, it was just too big a scale.”Noor Ahmad has a chat with MS Dhoni•AFP/Getty Images

CSK have now failed to chase 180-plus targets in their last ten attempts, dating back to 2020. Fleming admitted that it’s another worry and called for more contributions from the top order.”Yeah, whenever you’re not doing something well, it concerns me,” Fleming said. “That’s the job. So we’re looking to find the formula that will get us over the line. We’re certainly well aware of the [180-plus] chasing stat.”We are focusing hard bowling-wise to restrict teams below that [180], but we do need to be better with the bat. There’s no doubt about it. We need to have one or two players in the form, predominantly the top three or four, and you look at the teams that are going, well, you’ll see that the majority of the runs are getting scored through there, through the top four, so we need a bit more production there, and that then allows the more power-hitters or the players to finish off the coming in the right spots.”We’re having to introduce players, just not quite at the right time, and we’ve got [Shivam] Dube as well, who’s close [to returning to form], but just not quite getting the job done.”

West Ham were "close" to signing Paqueta upgrade, now he's worth more than Isak

The biggest story of the transfer window was undoubtedly Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool, but West Ham United had their own saga going on.

For a moment in time, it looked like Lucas Paqueta might have been leaving the club, with Aston Villa reportedly keen to sign him.

However, to the delight of the fans, the Brazilian maestro made it abundantly clear in his celebration against Nottingham Forest that he had no intention of leaving.

The former Lyon ace has been a brilliant player for the Hammers, although they did once come close to signing an upgrade who is now worth more than Isak.

Paqueta's West Ham career

It would be fair to say that since joining the club for around £51m in the summer of 2022, Paqueta hasn’t always had the easiest time of it at West Ham.

However, when you discount the off-pitch issues, it’s impossible to deny that he’s been more than worth the investment the Hammers initially made in him.

For example, despite playing under several different managers and in various systems, the 28-year-old has amassed an impressive tally of 21 goals and 14 assists in 124 games.

That comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 3.54 games, and, crucially, he produced five goal involvements in the club’s historic Conference League winning campaign.

In all, Paqueta remains one of the most talented players in West Ham’s squad, and someone who could make all the difference for them in what could still be a tough season.

Lucas Paqueta in action for West Ham.

Yet, things could have been very different, as just a couple of years ago, the club came close to signing someone who would have been a significant upgrade, someone now worth more than Isak.

The Paqueta upgrade West Ham almost signed

All clubs have their own list of star players they’ve missed out on over the years, and West Ham is obviously no different.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast’s One That Got Away series.

However, there are some players who are worse to miss out on than others, and that is certainly the case for Cole Palmer.

Yes, according to David Moyes, the Hammers were very “close” to getting the former Manchester City gem before his move to Chelsea, but the deal broke down, in part because Paqueta’s potential move to City fell apart.

It would have been an utterly sensational signing for the East Londoners, for good as the Brazilian is, the Englishman would be an upgrade.

For example, since moving to Stamford Bridge, the “world-class” superstar, as dubbed by Pat Nevin, has scored 43 goals and provided 29 assists in 98 appearances, totalling 7950 minutes.

That means he’s averaged a goal involvement every 1.36 games, or every 110.41 minutes, with the West Londoners, which is an outrageous rate of return.

Unsurprisingly, his out-of-this-world ability has seen his valuation skyrocket over the last couple of years, and according to the CIES Football Observatory, he is now worth up to 164m, which is about £142m, or £18m more than Liverpool paid for Isak.

Ultimately, there is no point crying over spilt milk, but we can’t help but think West Ham would be in a better position today had they secured a deal for Palmer two years ago.

The Hammers are keen to bring in a “sensational” player, who was a key summer target for Tottenham Hotspur.

'It's 2025' – Cricket Australia CEO pushes for a solution to bad light stoppages

Todd Greenberg believes the game can’t afford to have players leaving the field when conditions are less than ideal

Floodlights have enabled play to be extended, but bad light still regularly stops play•AFP/Getty Images

Todd Greenberg, the new Cricket Australia chief executive, says the game must find a solution to bad light stopping play, stressing that the paying fans need to be put at the forefront.Greenberg has recently been involved in his first round of ICC meetings, held in Harare, since replacing Nick Hockley at CA last month. While there are a range of significant issues in Greenberg’s inbox, watching players walk off the field when the light starts to fade is something that does not sit well with him as cricket competes for attention.Related

ICC considering change to existing two-ball rule in ODI playing conditions

“My view has always been we are in the entertainment business and so if we’re in the entertainment business that means we’re trying to make sure as many fans can enjoy their cricket as possible,” he told the Daily Telegraph.”The frustration that goes when we walk off with bad light is we may be one of the last industries left that would do that. We need to find ways to innovate and figure out solutions so that doesn’t happen in the future.”The issue of bad light has been brought more into focus in the era of day-night Test cricket, which use pink balls, although they are only regularly played in Australia. Various solutions have been thrown around to combat poor light including switching between different coloured balls although that has generally been viewed as a step too far.Traditional daytime Tests can continue under floodlights where they are available, which has seen more play possible than would have been the case in the past, but umpires will take the players off when artificial light takes over too much from natural light – a rough guide often used is when the shadows of the light towers are clearly visible on the field.Greenberg, who was previously in charge at the Australian Cricketers’ Association, acknowledged that players would have to be a key part of coming up with a new approach to poor light.”I’m a realist and I understand why [play stops for bad light] and I understand the difficulties, but ultimately we want to give fans the best outcomes and there is nothing more frustrating than having to go off for bad light, particularly in an environment where we can play under lights be it with different coloured balls or different technologies,” Greenberg said.”The players are part of the solution and we need to communicate really well with them. I’m a realist to know that it won’t be solved overnight, but geez, it’s 2025 and we can play in different conditions, I’m certain we can come up with a way to solve some of those challenges.”

"Terrible" – David Moyes can't believe what he saw in Everton's defeat to Wolves

Following an impressive start to the season, it’s now three games without a win for Everton, who left David Moyes in a frustrated mood following defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.

Wolves vs Everton: Toffees crash out of Carabao Cup

It’s been a tough week for the Toffees, who narrowly lost out against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby last weekend before travelling to Wolves in hope of getting back to winning ways. Once again, however, they found themselves on the losing side in a game that saw Vitor Pereira’s side outfire a blunt Everton attack.

After Marshall Munetsi opened the scoring in calamitous fashion, it was the turn of new Wolves signing Tolu Arokodare to get in on the act and end Everton’s Carabao Cup campaign before it could truly get started.

For the Toffees, all eyes will now be on a crucial game against West Ham United. If they want to prove that they’re ready to step beyond relegation scraps this season then a convincing display against the Hammers should be at the top of their priority list.

Moyes will also be hoping to see some improvement on the refereeing front after criticising the officials for the second game running last night. The Everton boss said, when asked about the treatment of Jack Grealish: “I think you might need to ask the referee that, if he thought he was giving them [fouls] because I think there was a couple of free kicks not given.

“Again, five minutes [added on] I thought looked very short on time as well, on the way the game went. We’ve not been getting much going for us, but that’s just the way it is.”

That said, most of his frustration centred around one specific moment caused by his players rather than the officials in the Midlands.

Moyes slams "diabolical" Everton moment

Moyes was particularly critical of the first goal that his side conceded, which saw them lose duels inside their own area and eventually allow Munetsi to convert a simple strike on the rebound of Mark Travers’ initial save.

Taking aim at his side, the Everton boss told reporters: “It was a 0-0 game in the first half. We gave away a diabolical goal. Wolves weren’t better than us in the first half, they were for the first 10 minutes or so, but they weren’t better.

“The game was a 0-0, they probably scored against the run of play in some ways. We gave away a terrible first goal which altered things and made the game a bit more difficult. I thought we probably dominated most of the second half, we just couldn’t find a way of getting a goal.”

O camisa 9 dominou e bateu à direita do gol, quase deixando tudo igual no Beira-Rio.
