Mark Wood 'quietly confident' about fitness ahead of Ashes opener

Fast bowler has taken cautious route to recovery after knee surgery but says he’s nearly ready for action

Mark Wood says he is “quietly confident” that he will be fit and ready to perform in the first Ashes Test in Perth on November 21.Wood was England’s leading wicket-taker in their 4-0 loss in the 2021-22 Ashes and blew Australia away with his pace to be named player of the match at Headingley in the 2023 series. But he has not bowled in a competitive match since the Champions Trophy in February, missing the entire English summer after surgery on his knee.He had initially targeted the fifth Test of England’s Test series against India for a potential comeback and was seen bowling with international team-mates in the nets throughout the summer. However, he reported swelling which required fluid to be drained from his knee. A similar setback saw him miss out on Durham’s County Championship run-in.Wood is due to arrive in New Zealand next week where he will join up with England’s white-ball squads and step up his rehabilitation, though he will not feature in a competitive match. He has been bowling in the heated marquee at England’s training base in Loughborough in recent weeks, and believes he is in a “good position” ahead of the Ashes.”It was a frustrating summer,” Wood told the podcast. “I didn’t get to play any cricket and my knee, at times when you think that you’re just about ready to play, it was not just quite there.Related

“I got knocked back a couple of times, but in the tent it’s been going well. I’ve had the speed gun out and the pace is getting up there, so I’m building nicely into New Zealand first, and then the Australian leg.”Hopefully, I’m in form, bowling well in the practice games and in the nets, and can put my hand up for that game [in Perth]. The rehab hasn’t just been a straight curve. It’s been a bit up and down, but I’m in a good position now where I’m hoping to kick on for that game.”I never want to give an answer where I say, ‘Yes, I’m pumped, I’m ready’. But I’m in a confident place at the minute and feeling a lot more positive, so I’m quietly confident.”Wood said that his rehabilitation from knee surgery has been different to previous elbow and ankle injuries, and described the process as “annoying”. He explained: “You keep thinking, ‘I’m nearly there’ and you’re just about to press the trigger to play. The fifth Test against India, I was so close, and then when I was at my top speed, my knee swelled up so I had to have it drained.”Then again at the back end of the year with Durham, I was so close to playing a game, but again, I just kept getting this slight swelling. The ECB, with what was coming up, were like, ‘Look, it’s a risk we don’t need to take.’ Thankfully, the last few times I’ve bowled, there hasn’t been that swelling there. It’s much more positive.”Wood has also spent some of this summer building his coaching credentials for his post-playing career, including a short stint with the England Lions. He is studying for his Level Three coaching qualification in the same cohort as several former England players, including Steven Finn, Chris Jordan, Sarah Taylor and Chris Woakes.

As good as Ekitike: £40m star just had his best game in a Liverpool shirt

Have Liverpool rediscovered how to win football games?

There’s no question that this has been an incredibly difficult start to the season for Arne Slot and his Premier League-winning Liverpool squad, but while the defeats have come in droves in recent months, Saturday’s confident win over Brighton & Hove Albion has rubber-stamped the mini-revival.

The Reds have returned to the top six, with the noise surrounding Mohamed Salah’s recent troubles being silenced for a while, the Egyptian replacing the injured Joe Gomez in the first half and putting in a strong display, whipping in the corner for Hugo Ekitike’s second-half strike.

Ekitike now has four goals from his past two Premier League matches, and he is becoming quite the player for the Merseyside club.

Ekitike's performance vs Brighton

After Ekitike joined Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt in an initial £69m deal this summer, he found his big move somewhat overshadowed by the Alexander Isak saga that swallowed the transfer discourse.

But it’s the Frenchman, 23, who has better established themselves, with his latest brace taking his tally to ten goals and an assist across 23 appearances in all competitions, and he’s rediscovered his Midas touch in the Premier League.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to argue against Ekitike taking precedence over Isak, England’s record signing at £125m, the Les Bleus star so much sharper, so much more fluent.

While many of FSG’s summer signings have flattered to deceive over the past several months, Ekitike has established himself as one of the most exciting goalscorers in Europe, well worth the pennies paid.

However, another of Liverpool’s summer recruits shone just as brightly against the Seagulls, and he might have even put in his best performance since making the move in June.

Liverpool prospect just put in his best performance

Liverpool have been in a rut this season, and it’s made it difficult for new signings to acclimatise. Florian Wirtz and Isak being two cases in point.

However, Milos Kerkez has arguably suffered the toughest start of the lot, with the Hungarian left-back so far removed from the fluid and fearsome Bournemouth full-back from last season.

The 21-year-old, who signed after a £40m deal was agreed, has so much more to give, with his bouncy athleticism not best represented as Slot’s tactical vision has struggled to take shape.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher called him a “nervous wreck” earlier in the season, but Kerkez looked more like the 2024/25 PFA Team of the Year inclusion at the Vitality Stadium, with Liverpool World acknowledging his ‘well-utilised aggression’, flawless save for one moment up against the tricky Yankuba Minteh.

It tells much of Kerkez’s combative performance that he won eight duels, energetic as he provided an outlet down the left flank and completing 89% of his passes and creating one chance.

Having endured such a challenging start to life at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, the young and talented Kerkez showed that he has what it takes, and it might even have been his finest showing in a Liverpool shirt.

It’s curious to note that Cody Gakpo was absent on the wing, having earlier this week been ruled out by Slot for the next few weeks. Kerkez’s connection with the inswinging Dutchman has been limited this season, one-dimensional.

Liverpool have taken several confident steps in the right direction, and though there is a long way to go before Slot can say that his system has stabilised and focus can be placed on winning trophies, we are beginning to see the signs that the recruits are worth their price tags, albeit with a few more still to demonstrate sustained improvement.

WPL 2026 to run from January 9 to February 5 in Navi Mumbai, Vadodara

The DY Patil Stadium and the Kotambi Stadium will be the two venues

ESPNcricinfo staffUpdated on 27-Nov-2025

The WPL 2026 trophy in all its glory•BCCI

WPL 2026 will run from January 9 to February 5 and will be played across two cities, Navi Mumbai and Vadodara. The dates for the fourth season was made by the league chairman Jayesh George at the start of the WPL auction in Delhi on Thursday. The DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai – where India recently won the Women’s ODI World Cup final – will start the tournament and host the first leg of the WPL. The league will then move to the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara where the final will also be played on February 5. This is the first time the WPL will be played in the January-February window; the first three seasons were played in February-March just before the IPL. This will also be the first time the WPL will not clash with major international fixtures.Thursday marked the first mega auction for the WPL since the inception of the league in 2023, and the first time right-to-match (RTM) cards were available to teams.Mumbai Indians (MI) are the defending champions of the WPL and have won two out of three editions so far. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the title in 2024 and Delhi Capitals (DC) had finished as runners-up in all three seasons. Ten days after the WPL ends, the India women’s team will start an all-format tour in Australia, for three T20Is, three ODIs and a Test from February 15 to March 9.’Would love to see home and away format’ – DC’s JindalEarlier this year was the first time the WPL was held in more than two cities, when the matches were played in Lucknow, Vadodara, Mumbai and Bengaluru and came closest to a home-and-away format, with UP Warriorz, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Giants and RCB getting home games. But with the format returning to just two cities for 2026 – as was the case in 2024 – the DC co-owner Parth Jindal hoped the tournament would get a longer window to accommodate a home-and-away format.”Yes, we would love to see the WPL home and away as well. I think this caravan format is okay, but it’s not ideal,” Jindal said during the auction. “And I’m sure that the BCCI is working on it. I think the amount of time that they get is very short and that’s why in order to fit the WPL within this window, this is the best and most ideal format, but I hope we get a bigger, longer window for the WPL as well going forward. And I think it is imminent that either one or two new teams will come in at some point. And that’s why I think the cycle is such a short cycle with only two WPLs over 14 months. So I’m pretty sure that the BCCI is planning on adding a team, and maybe with that addition, we move home and away. That would be ideal for the fans, for the game, and for the growth of the WPL.”The WPL has been expanding to more than one city since the first edition in 2023, when it was co-hosted by the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium in and around Mumbai.

Lancashire 'express disappointment' over Livingstone Blast semi-final dismissal

Lancashire have “formally expressed” their disappointment to the ECB over Liam Livingstone’s dismissal on Blast Finals Day at the weekend.Livingstone was given out lbw in Lancashire’s run chase during the first semi-final, against Somerset. He immediately reviewed, seemingly convinced of an inside edge; but the third umpire umpire, Sue Redfern, decided on the evidence of UltraEdge that there was no bat involved before the ball hit the back leg.Lancashire were 102 for 3 at the time, needing another 81 from 49 balls, but saw their challenge evaporate after Livingstone’s departure as the last seven wickets went down for 57 runs.Related

In a statement posted on X, Lancashire said: “Following on from Finals Day, @lancscricket has formally expressed its disappointment to the ECB regarding the decision that led to the dismissal of Liam Livingstone. The Lancashire allrounder was given out lbw for 29, following a review by the TV umpire.”While the club remains deeply frustrated and disappointed with the decision, @lancscricket is equally clear that it does not condone the misogynistic comments that have appeared across social media in response. Such behaviour is unacceptable, does not reflect the values of our club or the wider Red Rose family, and has no place in the game.”Lancashire had already expressed their frustrations ahead of Finals Day, as they were forced to contest the semi-final without the services of six first-choice players. Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood were all unavailable while on England duty, while Chris Green had departed for the CPL and Ashton Turner was recalled by Western Australia.Keaton Jennings called the scheduling “ludicrous”, with Lancashire giving a T20 debut to spinner Arav Shetty against Somerset, while allrounder George Balderson was also playing his first game of the season.

Angry Ginge names Man Utd legend he "would love" to join him on I'm A Celebrity

Angry Ginge has named a Manchester United legend as the one person he “would love” to join him in the I’m A Celebrity jungle if he could choose anyone.

The Twitch streamer has now touched down in Australia, having been confirmed as part of the line-up for the latest series of I’m A Celeb, which is due to start this Sunday at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.

The 23-year-old is not the only Mancunian taking part either, with his close friend, Aitch, also being revealed as one of the new contestants on Monday evening.

Having a friend in the camp will no doubt make it easier to settle into life in the jungle, but Angry Ginge, whose real name is Morgan Burtwistle, has now revealed he wishes a Man United legend was also heading down under this winter.

Angry Ginge "would love" Wayne Rooney to join him on I'm A Celeb

Speaking about the type of contestant he plans to be in a recent interview with ITV, Burtwistle said: “I will try to be the motivator in camp and make sure everyone is chatty and happy. I’m not argumentative either.

“And if I could pick anyone, I would love it if Wayne Rooney was in camp with me. We would have a laugh.”

The 40-year-old making an appearance may not be completely out of the question, having recently revealed he would be open to one day being a part of the ITV show, saying: “Would I? I think I would, at the right time.

“I’d struggle with some of the trials, though. You know the worst one, you know where they walk into a room…and there’s like a big ostrich looking at you. I didn’t [know he was scared of ostriches] but I’m just picturing them being there.”

The former Man United star also knows Angry Ginge well, having bizarrely joined his Pro Clubs team ‘Girth N Turf’ on EA Sports FC 24.

However, should he one day jet out to Australia, Rooney will have big shoes to fill, given that his wife Coleen finished as runner-up in the 2024 edition, behind only McFly singer Danny Jones.

With Angry Ginge, who has 1.4m Twitch followers, due to take part, this year’s I’m A Celeb is shaping up nicely regardless, but maybe 2026 will be the year we finally see Wazza taking part in a Bushtucker Trial…
