Charlie Allison’s 98 heads impressive collective effort while Michael Pepper remains 54 not out

Essex 325 for 5 (Allison 98, Pepper 54*) vs WarwickshireCharlie Allison fell two runs shy of a century in an effective batting display by Essex on the second day of their Rothesay County Championship match with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.Advancing towards the draw that would secure their Division One status, Essex closed on 325 for 5 with Allison’s 98 off 175 balls heading an impressive collective effort. No batter scored fewer than 25 while Michael Pepper made 54 not out (94), Dean Elgar 48 (111) and Matt Critchley 47 (64).After a washout on the first day and, judging by the weather forecast, very little play likely on the third, this match appears nailed on for a draw which would send both teams into next week’s final games safely clear of the bottom two.In their last home match of the season, Warwickshire chose to bowl and were unlucky not to take more than one wicket in the morning session. Olly Hannon-Dalby in particular maintained high pressure, conceding just three runs from his first seven overs, but the ball frequently beat the bat rather than taking the edge.Elgar and Paul Walter added 41 in 14 overs before the latter was lured into driving at a wide ball from Nathan Gilchrist and edged to wicketkeeper Alex Davies.Elgar moved diligently to 48 in 144 minutes then perished in similar fashion to his opening partner. The left-hander edged Gilchrist to second slip where Rob Yates accepted his 15th Championship catch of the season. When Tom Westley drove around an Ethan Bamber yorker, Essex were 111 for 3 but Allison and Critchley ensured there was no collapse with a measured partnership of 98 in 25 overs. Critchley was closing in on his 33rd first-class half-century when he nicked an excellent ball from Michael Booth to Davies.Allison found another resolute partner in Pepper. Both scored Championship centuries against Warwickshire at Chelmsford in July and this time they added 77 in 20 overs.Allison, having spent quite some time in the 90s, then attacked the wrong ball from Bamber and Rob Yates accepted his 16th championship catch of the season. That proved to be the only wicket with the new ball.Again, Warwickshire’s seamers bowled well without much luck but Pepper completed his half-century in the day’s penultimate over and Essex can be well-satisfied with a strong day’s work by their batters.Without Shane Snater (calf injury) and Sam Cook, who sustained a broken thumb during the Hundred, Essex are giving a first class debut to seamer Charlie Bennett.

Although Newcastle United’s start to the new campaign has left much to be desired, Magpie fans can take solace in the fact that Eddie Howe has pieced together an elite-level outfit over the past four years.
There have been some bumps in the road, with the latest wobble being keenly felt on Tyneside, but there have also been staggering heights, United having lifted last season’s Carabao Cup trophy and sealed a place in the Champions League for the second time in three years.
Howe must be given time to turn things around, bedding the new signings in and moulding this new variation of his tactical set-up. It should all come together, especially with the form in the Champions League and Carabao Cup suggesting the best is yet to come.
And with Nick Woltemade having replaced Alexander Isak so confidently at number nine, there’s plenty of reason for optimism.
However, other areas of the field still need some work, and it’s starting to look like reinforcing the midfield is among Howe’s priorities.
Newcastle planning to sign midfielder
For so long, Joelinton has been a pillar of strength in the middle of the park for Newcastle. However, the Brazil international has been run into the ground over so many years of tireless service, and he needs to be replaced.
The 29-year-old has been a chief proponent of Howe’s fast-running and aggressive brand of football. Now he is, at times, looking like a duck out of water, and that’s why an exciting replacement has been earmarked.
As per The Telegraph, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is emerging as a top target for Newcastle next summer, a little over one year after the Magpies sold him to the City Ground, forced as they were by Premier League financial pressure.
Anderson has risen to prominence this year, and the Tricky Trees are expected to demand in excess of £100m for the England international, with Manchester United also showing a vested interest in his signature.
This is an exorbitant figure, but it’s a testament to the former Toon talent’s rising stock that it would be a move welcomed by those on Tyneside, and one that could spearhead the club up to new heights.
What Elliot Anderson would offer Newcastle
Last week, Thomas Tuchel placed Anderson at a high-ranking table. “He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.”
Music to the Forest star’s ears, of course, though it’s got to be a bitter pill to swallow for Newcastle, whose interest in their academy graduate continues to grow.
It’s not hard to see why. Anderson is among the most mobile and complete centre-midfielders out there. He is tenacious and balanced and making continual improvements. His call-up to the Three Lions squad this year has paid dividends, and it is Anderson who is developing as Declan Rice’s starting midfield partner.
PSR left PIF with little choice, but there must be such regret around the decision to cash in on Anderson over a year ago, with the 23-year-old performing so well and in a role that would be perfect alongside Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes in the Newcastle engine room.

Anderson’s statistical output since signing for Forest in a £35m deal last year has been quite the thing. He is a monstrous dueller, and his sheer volume of recoveries tells of an athleticism that Howe’s system needs to fire on all cylinders.
Joelinton has provided that presence so robustly over the years, but he is indeed waning, and Anderson would undoubtedly be an upgrade.
It would be a worthwhile investment, even if Forest would demand a premium. Just imagine Anderson playing his football for Man United next season. He would raise their level, and that would directly hinder Newcastle in their own ambitions of becoming Champions League regulars.
Anderson might even prove to be a more influential signing than Woltemade has been. The German striker has scored six goals in black and white since the summer, but he plays in a drop-deep kind of way, and Newcastle have been drained of Isak’s pace and dynamism. Here is one of the biggest tactical inhibitors Howe is contending with.
Anderson would be a far greater fit. He would lift Newcastle and reshape the midfield, bouncing off the superstars beside him and playing with the kind of gusto that only those wearing their boyhood club’s shirt can muster.
After all, having been hailed by analyst Ben Mattinson as a “do-it-all midfield warrior” and a “powerhouse carrier with a bit of passing range”, it’s understandable that Howe should have such a personal desire to bring him back to the club, having been quizzed on the topic in October.
“I don’t know [if he will come back] but certainly from my perspective I would love him to. It [his sale] didn’t sit right with me then, doesn’t sit right with me today that we, as a football club, were forced to make a decision that we didn’t want to make.
“And a player that had given everything to rise through the ranks here to try to play for Newcastle, that was ended by financial restrictions…”
If Newcastle truly get the green light from PIF down the line and have the resources and freedom to launch a record-breaking bid at Anderson, they must ensure they bring him back to St. James’ Park, thus beating off a direct rival and restoring the equilibrium.
Newcastle already have the new Anderson & he's "England's next superstar"
Eddie Howe could unearth Newcastle United’s next Elliot Anderson by starting this promising star more often.

New Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy has been thrown in at the deep end ahead of a clash with Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday in his first match.
The Hoops boss has taken over from the vastly-experienced interim Martin O’Neill, who won seven of his eight games in the dugout after coming in to steady the ship after Brendan Rodgers resigned.
Nancy is now tasked with implementing his own ideas and tactics in the coming days, weeks, and months ahead, after his move from Columbus Crew in the MLS.
The formation that Wilfried Nancy could play at Celtic
Many Celtic supporters may already be wondering what formation the new manager will line-up with against Hearts, and for matches in the future, after O’Neill played a 4-2-3-1 and Rodgers played a 4-3-3.
Nancy has only had a couple of days on the training ground, having been announced on Wednesday night, so the game against the Jam Tarts may come too soon for radical changes.
With time on the training pitch, though, the French boss may want to deploy a 3-4-2-1 formation, which Transfermarkt notes is his favoured system.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Per FBref, Nancy played a 3-4-3 or a 3-4-2-1 in 31 of his 43 games in charge of Columbus Crew this year, and played a back three or a back five in 40 of those matches.
This suggests that the Frenchman may line up with three central defenders for the most part with Celtic, which could make Dane Murray the biggest winner of his appointment at Parkhead.
Why Dane Murray could play a key role for Wilfried Nancy
The Scottish youngster’s last start for Celtic came in Rodgers’ final match against Hearts, as he scored a nightmare own goal in a 3-1 defeat.
It was a poor afternoon for Murray and Celtic, as he struggled at the heart of the defence, and he only played 38 minutes across two substitute appearances in O’Neill’s time in interim charge, as the experienced boss favoured Auston Trusty and Liam Scales as a pairing.
With Cameron Carter-Vickers being a long-term absentee with an Achilles injury, though, there could be a place for the academy graduate to come back into the team as part of a back three or back five, if Nancy decides to stick with his trend of using formations with three centre-backs.
Kieran Tierney could be an option to play as a third centre-back, as he has done for Scotland in the past, but then Celtic would have three left-footed defenders across the back, which is not ideal for playing out under pressure.
Bringing a right-footed centre-back like Murray into the fold could be ideal for Nancy, and he would have more protection than he did in a back four under Rodgers, as there would be two senior defenders alongside him, in Trusty and Scales.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old colossus has shown some positive signs, despite his own goal against Hearts, in his three league appearances, dominating opposition attackers in physical duels.
Back in August, Rodgers claimed that Murray’s “ceiling is so high” and that he will really grow in the next 12 to 18 months. Whilst it may not happen as he envisaged, as another manager is in the dugout, that could play out with Nancy’s preferred system.
The Scottish prospect has been the only centre-back on the bench in recent games, with Carter-Vickers out, and that suggests that he would be the most logical inclusion for the new manager as part of a back three.
Given that a change in shape from a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 to a 3-4-2-1 or a 3-4-3 would essentially mean that a new centre-back position emerges, it seems like Murray has the most to gain and could be the biggest winner from this appointment for the Hoops.
Better than Maeda: Celtic star is going to be undroppable under Nancy
This Celtic star who was even better than Daizen Maeda against Dundee should be Wilfried Nancy’s first undroppable star.
1 ByDan Emery Dec 4, 2025
However, it is then down to the academy graduate to take his chance when it comes and prove that he has what it takes to be a regular starter for Celtic, and that his game against Hearts was a blip rather than a sign of things to come.
