Imran Tahir, the captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors team that clinched its first CPL title on Sunday, has thanked R Ashwin for predicting that his team would win the tournament.Tahir mentioned the India spinner at the post-match presentation after Amazon Warriors’ nine-wicket win over Trinbago Knight Riders. Among all the others he thanked, Tahir made note of those who had joked about his being appointed captain.”It’s been a great experience playing for this beautiful franchise and playing for these beautiful people who always come and support us,” Tahir said. “I’m just grateful to the almighty first of all. Coming into the competition, everyone was sending jokes that I had become a captain, so I think actually those things motivated me, so I actually want to thank those people who said that, and I also want to thank my family, all the players’ families, they’ve been on the road with us. It’s been a great journey, very special journey.Related

“Also want to thank our analyst Prasanna [Agoram] – he’s been working every day, 20 hours a day, and giving me all the plans. I’m really, really grateful to him, and also want to thank Ashwin from India. He said before the competition that we will do it.”Amazon Warriors topped the league table but endured a setback in the first Qualifier where they lost to Knight Riders. They bounced back thereafter, though, bowling Jamaica Tallawahs out for 101 in the second Qualifier and skittling Knight Riders for 94 in the final.”I think this year we were more hungry than ever before,” Tahir said – Amazon Warriors had failed to get their hands on the trophy despite making the title round five times in the past. “That’s the thing, I think if you want something really badly, it will happen for you, even though we lost our first Qualifier. Everyone [was talking] about the toss, and we did it in both situations [batting and bowling first], and we won games. The team belief was there.”Result is never guaranteed, but the way we came back in the competition, and I said one thing before we came here [for the final] – ‘we’ve been the best team in the competition, no one can stop us if we play the brand of cricket we’ve been playing’.”Kieron Pollard was disappointed with how the final went, but felt Knight Riders had “played spectacularly well throughout the entire tournament”•Getty Images

Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard was disappointed that his team was bowled out so cheaply, but said he was proud of his team for their performance over the course of the season.”Obviously we didn’t bat properly. Making 94 in the first innings of a final is never going to be enough,” he said. “Am I disappointed with the result? Yes, I’m disappointed with the result, but am I disappointed with the fellows. No, I thought they played spectacularly well throughout the entire tournament, and you know, we were beaten by the better team today, Guyana, so well played to Guyana. I think they played well, they played consistent cricket throughout the tournament and they’re deserved winners tonight.”Pollard was particularly impressed that his team reached the final after finishing at the bottom of the table last season.”Just the belief and the fight [we showed],” he said. “Obviously, finishing sixth in the last tournament, if we’d finished second-to-last, we’d have done better than last year, but having said that, the way how the guys started in the campaign, Trinidad, we were on it, guys were injured, guys fought all the way till the end, and you can’t ask for a better effort from the support staff, from the team-mates, from everybody. So congratulations to them, tough luck on the result, but sometimes in life some people deserve things more than you, and I thought Guyana deserved it tonight.”

Whiteman and Bancroft pile on the runs as WA make strong reply

The pair’s 227-run opening stand got the team to within 2 runs of Tasmania’s 439, with the match headed towards a draw

Western Australia opener Cameron Bancroft fell short of consecutive Sheffield Shield centuries, but captain Sam Whiteman made Tasmania toil on a flat WACA pitch as the match appears headed for a draw.Whiteman batted the bulk of day three as WA almost reached parity by stumps. Facing 383 balls, Whiteman was agonisingly short of his highest first-class score of 193.WA’s strong reply was built on a 227-run opening partnership between Whiteman and Bancroft as Tasmania’s attack struggled to penetrate in batting friendly conditions. Some long-time WACA observers had wondered whether it was the dullest pitch at the famous ground since the 2015 New Zealand Test, which seemingly hastened Australia quick Mitchell Johnson’s retirement. But Bancroft missed a golden opportunity of making another century after his 122 in WA’s big opening victory over Victoria. He is in a race among several contenders to replace veteran opener David Warner, who is expected to retire from Test cricket this summer.Tasmania had some respite with temperatures significantly cooler than the oppressive heat over the first two days. As cloud covered the ground late in the day, their quicks finally enjoyed belated assistance with seamer Gabe Bell conjuring reverse swing.Resuming on 63 not out, Bancroft survived a big lbw appeal from Bell early before he blunted the attack much like during the latter part of day two. With WA still facing a large deficit, Bancroft and Whiteman batted cautiously with the occasional boundary a welcome sight from the continual stout defending. With Tasmania’s bid for a wicket appearing forlorn, the main interest was centred on who would score a century first with Bancroft and Whiteman neck and neck for much of the innings. But with Bancroft intent on stonewalling, Whiteman inched away and notched his first century of the season with a pull shot to the boundary off seamer Mitchell Owen. All eyes after lunch were on Bancroft, whose inevitable march to another ton was denied when spinner Jarrod Freeman trapped him lbw seemingly out of nowhere.Bancroft, along with those at the ground, could not believe he missed a sweep shot, but his dismissal triggered a succession of wickets not seen since the opening session of the match. After starting the season strong with 94 against Victoria, teenager Teague Wyllie was plumb lbw to hard-working Bell for 4. Wyllie can sometimes seem glued to the crease, especially early in his innings, and that was again the case here.Bell was further rewarded when an impatient Hilton Cartwright holed out as WA inexplicably lost three wickets in seven overs. Cartwright, who played two Tests as an allrounder for Australia, made his return from a knee injury but is playing as a specialist batter. In a rare recent sight, clouds started to form overhead to further improve Tasmania’s mood but normal resumption resumed with Whiteman and Aaron Hardie making it look rather easy.Perched on 149 at tea, Whiteman quickly reached another milestone after resumption while Hardie played aggressively to score an attractive half-century.Hardie, who recently made his international debut, performed well against Victoria with 48 and five wickets for the match. He eyed a big score, but on 56 hit Freeman straight to short extra cover.Bell welcomed the increasingly gloomy conditions, but wickets remained few and far between to further underline this uncharacteristic WACA pitch.

Gonzalo Garcia: Real Madrid's 'new Raul' can save Los Blancos millions and keep Kylian Mbappe fresh – but what will his Club World Cup heroics mean for Endrick's future?

The 21-year-old has been key to Los Blancos' progression in the United States, and is now set for a role in Xabi Alonso's squad next season

Thibaut Courtois claimed that he knew what Real Madrid's biggest problem was. He'd been out there at Santiago Bernabeu, watching from his own 18-yard box as Madrid toiled through their 5-1 aggregate loss to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The issue wasn't that Raul Asencio was rash at centre-back, nor that the midfield was mightily unbalanced. It wasn't Rodrygo's quiet night, or Lucas Vazquez's suspect defending. Rather, it was because Madrid were missing a gangly striker in his mid-30s who had left nine months earlier.

"We put in a lot of crosses, but this year we don't have a Joselu, a born striker up there," Courtois said following the 2-1 home defeat to the Gunners in the second leg. "Sometimes you have to be self-critical. I feel that we have to make more team plays and not all individual."

Courtois had a point. Madrid put in cross after cross on the night, but Arsenal dealt with them with some ease, despite missing Gabriel Magalhaes. The fact that the Madrid goalkeeper brought up Joselu – someone who is below the technical levels usually required at the very highest level – ensured the quote go somewhat viral, but his broader point was true: Madrid needed a No.9.

Three months on, and little has changed. Madrid are an expensively assembled football team with more attacking talent than pretty much anyone out there, but they don't really have a big lad to put the ball in the net. In Gonzalo Garcia, however, they might have found the answer.

Garcia, a product of the Madrid academy, has impressed at the Club World Cup while Kylian Mbappe has sat out due to illness, and has scored or assisted in every game during their run to the quarter-finals. That's a small sample size, but perhaps significant enough to keep him in Xabi Alonso's plans, thus save the club a fair few Euros in the process.

Getty ImagesSeizing his chance

Garcia arrived at the Club World Cup with just 78 minutes of first-team experience under his belt, but was thrown into the line up by Alonso after Mbappe came down with a nasty bout of gastroenteritis which even hospitalised him for a short period. Endrick, meanwhile, is not with the squad after suffering a muscle injury in the final weeks of the domestic campaign.

Alonso had made it clear during his time at Bayer Leverkusen that he likes to play with a No.9 who will stay roughly within the width of the 18-yard box when his team has the ball, and run like hell when they don't. Basically, he wants a presence, a nuisance, and someone who can put the ball into the net – all rolled into one.

Those players usually cost hundreds of millions, but Garcia has shown in his first four Club World Cup appearances that he has all of the necessary traits to succeed in such a role. He opened the scoring against Al-Hilal in Madrid's tournament opener, assisted in their second game against Pachuca, and then found the net against both Red Bull Salzburg and Juventus thereafter. His goal against Juve set up a nervy 1-0 win in the last 16, and meant that Garcia was the only player in the competition to have been directly involved in a goal in every game at the tournament thus far.

AdvertisementAFPPutting in the hard yards

It is often assumed in football that young players, especially strikers, will run harder and faster than senior pros when they are given the chance, and while that isn't always the case, Garcia is willing to put in the hard yards.

Alonso has drilled home the idea that he wants absolute commitment on both sides of the ball from his Madrid team, but anyone who watched more than 10 minutes of Carlo Ancelotti's side this past season will know that it won't be an easy task for the Basque manager. Madrid were a team whose effort levels dropped in the final weeks of the season. Even Jude Bellingham, who had been the model of grit and effort in his first year, exhibited apathy as the campaign came to a close.

Changing that culture outright won't be easy, but having players like Garcia will certainly help Alonso. The 21-year-old hasn't stopped running all tournament, hounding defences constantly while making fruitless sprints in behind to clear room for Vinicius Jr.

"I had no doubts about Gonzalo," Alonso said following the victory over Juventus. "What he's doing isn't a surprise. He's done it many times at Castilla. He's the typical number nine, who knows how to wait for his opportunity, who moves well. I'm very happy for him."

Getty ImagesWorking with Vini

Garcia's emergence could prove important for Vinicius, in particular. So much of the tactical setup for Madrid over the past three years has been about creating spaces that the Brazilian can work in. it's a process that started with Karim Benzema, who instinctively knew how to make space for others, whole Bellingham did some of the same in 2022-23. Mbappe, however, didn't, and that is partially why the Vinicius struggled so much last season.

Garcia, however, gets it, and his running perfectly set up Vinicius' opening goal against Salzburg. In real time, it looked simple enough, a Bellingham through-ball and Vinicius finish, but the role that didn't get enough credit was that of Garcia, whose diagonal run dragged a defender out of the way, thus opening up the lane for Bellingham to thread his pass through.

It's in those situations where Madrid are unstoppable. Get Vinicius moving towards an isolated defender, with others buzzing around him as either passing options or decoys to drag defenders away, and he can showcase his world-class ability. Garcia can certainly help in that regard.

Getty ImagesWhat it means for Mbappe

Ironically, Mbappe's first run after he eventually made his tournament debut off the bench against Juventus was the wrong one. Vinicius had the ball on the left, in the channel between the opposing centre-back and right-back, the spot where he is at his most deadly. And Mbappe, instead of running to the far post, went for an overlap that wasn't really on. The defender bit, but Vinicius had no choice but to play into pressure, leaving everyone else in Madrid white phenomenally frustrated when the opportunity came to nothing.

It was assumed when Mbappe signed that Madrid would figure out how to get him into their already star-studded attack, but it's clear that we will need to mould his game and show that he is willing to work as a central striker for the good of his team if he and they are to succeed. However, against Juve, Madrid were markedly worse when he was on the pitch, as they lacked fluidity and tried to play more off the cuff rather than in synchronised movements. More clinical finishing from Juve at the death and the game would have gone to extra-time, if not ended in a win for the Bianconeri.

Mbappe, when fully-fit, is undroppable. He is Florentino Perez's man, and thus it is Alonso's job to get the best out of him. But in Garcia, the new coach at least has an alternative option who can potentially push Mbappe while giving him time out of the limelight in lesser games so as to keep him fresh for the big occasions.

Shami and Kohli put unbeaten India top of the table

They were without their most irreplaceable player in a top-of-the-table clash against a New Zealand side that’s had the wood over them in recent global-tournament meetings, and this New Zealand side put them under severe pressure on multiple occasions. But in the end, India continued to typify the 2023 World Cup equivalent of Gary Lineker’s famous quote on a superteam from a different sport: “Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and in the end, the Germans always win.”We’re still only halfway through the league stage, and knockouts are knockouts, but India have looked so hard to beat that even this game, their most intense tussle yet in this tournament, ended with Virat Kohli trying to repeat what he did against Bangladesh on Thursday, and refuse singles with India in sight of victory in order to try and reach his hundred. It didn’t quite happen this time, with the attempted winning six on 95 ending up as a catch on the midwicket boundary, but India sauntered home nonetheless, with Ravindra Jadeja pulling Matt Henry for four to complete the job with two overs to spare. Jadeja made an unbeaten 39, a vital innings given that he came in at No. 7 with India still 83 away from victory. With Hardik Pandya out injured, India replaced him with two players, a specialist batter in Suryakumar Yadav and a specialist fast bowler in Mohammed Shami, which meant India’s batting effectively ended with Jadeja at No. 7.The lack of batting depth was counterbalanced, however, by the increased menace of India’s pace attack, who played a starring role in bowling New Zealand out for 273 after they had been 178 for 2 at one stage. Shami, playing his first game of the tournament, led the way with his second five-wicket haul in World Cups, his bullying of New Zealand’s lower order the centerpiece of a superlative effort by India in the last 10 overs, where they took six wickets while conceding just 54.Particularly impressive was India’s shackling of Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand’s top scorer. Mitchell had put on 159 for the third wicket with Rachin Ravindra, and reached an exactly run-a-ball hundred in the 41st over, but India kept him to just 30 off his last 27 balls. He was ninth out in the final over, caught on the wide long-on boundary to give Shami his fifth wicket.Daryl Mitchell brought up ODI century No. 5•ICC/Getty Images

Each of Shami’s wickets seemed to come with a question attached to it: “You’re keeping on the bench?” He struck first ball after coming on as first change, getting Will Young to play on with a typically upright-seamed inducker. Then he broke the Mitchell-Ravindra stand with an offcutter into the pitch. And he ended New Zealand’s hopes of getting near or past 300, effectively, by splattering the stumps of Mitchell Santner and Henry with consecutive balls in the 48th over.Chasing a significantly smaller target than they may have envisaged at one stage, India began in typically ominous fashion, with Rohit Sharma hitting four sixes in a 40-ball 46 that dominated an opening stand of 71 with Shubman Gill. During this partnership, India extracted a strange sort of revenge for the Old Trafford semi-final of 2019, where their fast bowlers had caused as much trouble with the new ball as New Zealand’s quicks but ended up with significantly fewer early wickets. This time Henry beat both openers’ bats repeatedly – including Gill three times in a row – and Trent Boult saw an edge from Rohit fall short of slip, but there were no wickets in the first powerplay.Thereafter it was all about Kohli, even though he typically did most of his work in the shadows – literally for a while when a spectral fog enveloped the ground, eventually stopping play for around 15 minutes. Kohli was the less-dominant partner in half-century stands for the third and fourth wickets, but where Shreyas Iyer fell to another short ball and KL Rahul played down the wrong line against Santner to be dismissed for the first time in the tournament, he endured, as he always does in run-chases.Ever so often, Kohli imposed himself on the game with an incandescent shot: an on-the-up square drive off Lockie Ferguson to get off the mark; a charging, flourishing extra-cover drive off Henry to get to 40; and in between an inside-out loft for six off Ravindra to release whatever pressure New Zealand had put on him by keeping him to 28 off his first 47 balls. From that point, Kohli scored 67 off 57 balls. A significant hiccup arrived when he got into a mix-up that sent back Suryakumar Yadav, but once Jadeja eased India’s fears over their lack of batting depth, the result became a formality.Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja operated at full intensity•Associated Press

New Zealand would have been disappointed at this because they had put themselves in a commanding position at one stage after India had sent them in. Ravindra and Mitchell had fought extremely hard to get them into that position, coming together after Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Shami had combined to reduce them to 19 for 2 in the ninth over.Along the way, the two of them demonstrated to all other sides a method to combat India’s attack. Mitchell exemplified this with his calculated risk-taking, particularly at the start of overs. He mixed up his pre-ball movements against the fast bowlers, sometimes shuffling across his stumps and out of his crease, at other times stepping back towards his off stump, and manipulating line and length in this manner. Most telling, though, was his calculated assault on Kuldeep Yadav, to whom he used his feet multiple times to launch him down the ground. In all, he scored 43 runs off Kuldeep – the most any batter has scored against the left-arm wristspinner in an ODI innings – off just 28 balls.Kuldeep conceded 48 in his first five overs, which would have worried India considerably, given that they didn’t have a sixth bowler. But the measure of Kuldeep’s skill and self-confidence came over his next five overs, in which he had Mitchell dropped at long-off, took two vital wickets – Tom Latham deceived by a flatter skidder and trapped plumb in front, Glenn Phillips caught off a miscue against the wrong’un – and conceded just 25.Kuldeep’s display was an encapsulation of India’s day. They were put under intense pressure by a formidable opponent, but they trusted their methods and came out unscathed. This India side can be rattled, but for any side to beat them over the next four weeks will likely take a special effort of sustained excellence.

South Africa rise to the top by the barest of margins in thriller against Pakistan

Their one-wicket win took them level with India on ten points at the top of the table, but ahead on net run rate

Firdose Moonda27-Oct-20231:18

Urooj: Rizwan was a massive letdown against South Africa

As Keshav Maharaj exploded into celebration, having swung Mohammad Nawaz to the fine-leg boundary for the winning runs with the No. 11 for company, waves of relief and elation washed over his team-mates watching from the dressing room. South Africa had thrown off the yoke of the choke by the barest of margins against Pakistan in Chennai to chase successfully for the first time in their World Cup 2023 campaign. The one-wicket win took them level with India on ten points at the top of the table, but ahead on net run rate, though they have played an extra game. The victory was set up by their bowlers – Tabraiz Shamsi and Marco Jansen in particular – who dismissed Pakistan for 270 in 46.4 overs despite them having been well placed at 225 for 5 in the 40th. And when Aiden Markram – who overtook Virat Kohli to become the second-highest run scorer of this World Cup during his innings of 91 – and David Miller were putting together their 70-run stand for the fifth wicket, a South African win looked comfortable. All that changed when Miller edged Shaheen Shah Afridi behind in the 34th over, with the target still 65 runs away. The fine balance appeared to swing South Africa’s way once again as Jansen joined Markram and the pair began to hack at the equation rather than approach it with caution, being South Africa’s last pair of recognised batters. The ball after he clattered Haris Rauf back over his head for a flat six in the 37th over, Jansen spooned a slower ball to Babar Azam at point, leaving South Africa 36 away from the target with four wickets in hand.Fourteen runs later, the legspinner Usama Mir, who came into this game in the 15th over of South Africa’s chase as a concussion substitute for Shadab Khan, picked up his second wicket: Markram’s attempted heave resulting in a leading edge that landed in Babar’s hands once again. South Africa’s last recognised batter was gone with his team still 22 short.Afridi then found the outside edge of Gerald Coetzee and Rauf pulled off a one-handed diving return catch to dismiss Lungi Ngidi. By then, they had poked and prodded their way to within 11 runs of victory. On another day, umpire Alex Wharf might have upheld Rauf’s lbw appeal against the No. 11 Shamsi off the final ball of the 46th over. Not tonight. Pakistan reviewed the not-out decision, only to watch in agony as the ball-tracking showed impact to be umpire’s call. Nine balls later, it was all over – after 25 matches, the 2023 ODI World Cup had its first thriller. And South Africa did not choke.Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj celebrate South Africa’s nail-biting win•ICC/Getty ImagesWhile South Africa’s batting performance may have been jittery, their bowling effort – their weaker discipline so far in the tournament – was impressive on a flat surface. After Pakistan opted to bat, it took incisive use of the short ball from Jansen and Coetzee and the smart selection of Shamsi, who turned the ball both ways, to dent their run-scoring.Ngidi returned from a knee niggle that had kept him out of the Bangladesh game to open the bowling alongside Jansen and the pair began with a short ball barrage. One of Jansen’s went over both Abdullah Shafique and Quinton de Kock’s heads for byes, while another from Ngidi, went to the point boundary but South Africa’s relentless approach did not take long to pay off. In Jansen’s third over, Shafique holed out off Ngidi at deep-square leg.In Jansen’s next over, South Africa inserted Heinrich Klaasen at a deep-slip/short-third and Jansen went full and wide. Imam-ul-Haq reached for it, edged and was caught to leave Pakistan 38 for 2 in the seventh over.Markram was introduced in the eighth over – presumably for the match-up with Babar who has not been at his best against spin – and Rizwan continued living dangerously. He chipped Markram wide of cover and batted on to bring up his 2000th ODI run and then hit boundaries of Jansen, Markram and Maharaj to get Pakistan going. With spin at both ends, Rizwan and Babar built steadily and their third-wicket stand grew to 49 before Bavuma called on Coetzee. Used in the enforcer role, Coetzee was up at 140kph and around the helmet from the get-go and it did not take too long for him to have an impact. His fifth ball was a bouncer which Rizwan top-edged to de Kock.Pakistan then promoted Iftikhar Ahmed to No. 5 for the first time in his career, ahead of Saud Shakeel who is reputed for playing spin well. He scored only five runs off the first 14 balls he faced, then hit Maharaj over cow corner for six, Ngidi over midwicket for four but then, just after the halfway stage, failed to read a Shamsi googly and hit it to Klaasen at mid-on.All the while, Babar was ticking along and he went on to bring up a third half-century of this World Cup campaign, off 64 balls. Pakistan needed him to bat on but a review from de Kock, who thought he had Babar caught down leg off a Shamsi legbreak, ended his vigil.Haris Rauf took a stunning catch to get rid of Lungi Ngidi•ICC/Getty ImagesShakeel and Shadab combined for an 84-run sixth-wicket stand as South Africa’s death bowling struggles appeared to come early. Runs came off the spinners and Coetzee, who eventually broke the stand with a signature bumper. Shadab tried to clear midwicket but gave Maharaj a simple catch. Fifteen balls later, Shakeel threw his bat at a Shamsi delivery close to off stump and nicked off. Pakistan had already used their finisher earlier in the innings and the impact of how far that backfired was clear when neither Afridi nor Mohammad Nawaz came off and Pakistan were bowled out with 20 balls to spare.Pakistan gave Iftikhar a promotion with the ball too, and he bowled the first delivery of the chase down leg side for five wides. Two balls later, Shadab hit his head on the turf while fielding and had to be walked off the field. The eventful start to South Africa’s innings continued when de Kock, the top scorer of the World Cup, took 18 off Afridi’s opening over. Afridi, however, eventually had de Kock caught on the deep-square-leg boundary.Bavuma had a quiet start to his comeback innings, after missing the last two games with a stomach bug, but took on Nawaz. He found boundaries via the sweep, the cover drive and the on drive, then hit Afridi over the inner ring and Haris over midwicket but played one big shot too many as the powerplay came to a close, pulling Wasim to midwicket.Rassie van der Dussen and Markram dealt with the pace from Rauf and Wasim with ease and Markram’s upper cut over deep third off Rauf was the shot of their 53-run stand for the third wicket. While they were batting it was confirmed that Shadab would not be able to take any further participation in the match and his replacement Usama was brought on in the 19th over. He made an almost immediate impact when he pinned van der Dussen on the pads with a topspinner. Van der Dussen reviewed and ball-tracking showed it was going on to clip leg stump. Seventeen deliveries later, Klaasen top-edged Wasim to Usama at deep third and South Africa were stuttering.Markram and Miller then came together to steady the chase with their attacking approach – adding 70 off 69 balls – and though South Africa stumbled again after they were separated, they did not fall short like they had done against Netherlands.
